 Post subject: Any Tips for Singing and Heat Resistance?

I have two things I should improve on, and I combined them both into the same topic to save some space. Nifty, eh?

Anyway, with the singing. Even though I am rather musically talented, I sound horrible when singing. Is there any way I can teach myself to sing? All I need are a few tips and suggestions on how to not sound so bad when I sing along to my CDs and/or radio.

As for the heat resistance, it prevents me from doing much at this time of year. In marching band practice it can really take its toll. I drink quite a bit of water, I usually get enough to eat, and I tie my hair back and I still don't know why I feel faint outside. Is there something else I can do that will help? Also, is there any way I can get rid of it for good?

Singing: No. Can't help. Last time I did Karaoke, homeland security had to come in. Being labeled a terrorist for covering Whitesnake is a painful experience.

As for the heat resistance, I may be able to help you here. You're feeling faint not only because of water loss, but because you're suffering from heatstroke, which doesn't have as much to do with dehydration as you think. Rather than drinking straight water, start out rehearsal with a mix of 1 part powerade or gatorade to two parts water. It'll taste like garbage, but it will help you to maintain a decent electrolyte balance (electrolytes are ionized atoms or molecules which transmit electricity in solution, hence the name; the three most important for animals are potassium, sodium, and chlorine). Later, switch to straight water so that you don't get too much sugar into your system and get sick.

Also, wear light clothes wherever possible, and don't wear a hat. Since it's hot, you want heat to escape, and your head has so many blood vessels that it acts as a radiator - and a hat can interrupt this. If sun is an issue, wear a visor like Michelle Wie. If sweat in your eyes is an issue, either wear a headband like Jimmy Connors or let your eyebrows grow out. The second one makes it hard to get dates - you've been warned.

Unfortunately, one of the factors affecting our ability to deal with heat is genetic. Certain latitudinal ranges simply deal better with hot weather all around the world, just as people from other ranges can deal better with extreme cold. If you're of Northern European stock, then your body will have a tendency to overreact to heat by opening your capillaries beneath your skin too soon and too much, which causes your skin to heat up much more quickly than other folks, so you sweat sooner and start losing moisture and minerals more quickly than some other people. Nothing you can do about it - I have the same problem. I can walk around in a T-shirt in 20-degree weather, but I sweat like a horse in a glue factory if it gets above 75. This also makes it hard to get dates.

Ok, for heat resistance, just keep your indoor temperature high and that'll make the leap from indoor to outdoor not very significant. Jut turn up the thermostat a bit each day.

You may be bad in the heat because you've grown too use to being in a cool enviorment, so if ou us the A/C turn it off and maybe use fan instead, that mite help you build up some endurance.

Singing - practice breathing. You want to maximise your lung capacity and get the diaphragm to move as low as possible, like it feels it's near the stomach. Through slightly gritted teeth, make a sss noise. Use that breath to make it for as long as you can on a stable volume. Later on, try increasing volume as you make the noise and decreasing.

If you have a keyboard or some other instrument that doesn't require your mouth, practice some of those voice exercises teachers often make students learn. (If you know none, try do-me-so-la-so-me-do. I know another one but I forget the notation right now.)

Practice singing whenever you can I think. But if there is no hope for you when you practice by yourself, like me, get some singing lessons if possible. :P

I'm sorry I can't offer any advice for heat resistance and that the singing stuff is so hopelessly muddled. :oops:

Thanks for the help everyone!

I'm already doing breathing exercises in band, so that's not what I need to work on. It's just that I'm so out of tune. I'll try the do-re-mi thing with my piano later.

As for heat resistance, my house is usually quite warm. My family isn't a family that likes to run the a/c or heater longer than they have to. However, I do spend a ridiculous amount of time in the basement where it hovers around a temperature of 75 degrees F during the summer. Before you say just get outside more often, I do go outside for marching band practice and I have a couple plants I take care of (I love my catnip plants). I'm probably also one of the few people in this age that still finds poking the dirt to be amusing. I'll try that bit about mixing in a sport drink with water. I was planning on doing something similar with just pure sugar, but that might work better.

No. I usually don't sweat much anyway, I'm usually dizzy before I can get that far.

I would be woodwind. Either way, both woodwind and brass go through the same breathing exercises everyday in band. The point is to maximize the amount of air that goes in and out of your lungs in different sized breaths. I actually have it a bit easy, clarinet and bassoon (my main instruments) don't require much air and there's not very much in the way to hinder your breathing.

I dunno how to get people to sing well, although sometimes I go off key and it helps to play violin along with it so I recognise and can copy notes. With a woodwind... this could be a problem :lol:

But when you go outside and get dizzy, do you see green or does your vision go a bit blurry for a few seconds? If so I might be able to help...

anyone can sing if they keeps the funtamentals in mind. dont breathe through your nose. pretend your nose doenst exist. 2nd open your throat and over pronunce everything. always stand straight. as a music student you already know that helps with breathing. just try to keep your arms relaxed. tight muscles can cause ur pitch to bend.

as for the heat eat bread-like foods. its simple and fills you up. your stomach has an easier time breaking it down so theres less chance of throwing it up. keep water with you at all times and make sure its cold. if you feel weak try gatorade or powerade. if you even begin to feel weak sit down. it helps alot. dont be like me & go until you pass out (im the heat stroke queen lol).

but im sure others have told you the same thing haha.
