*sigh* to want to go back int othe past and speak to yourself would indeed create a paradox, as changing your past self would change the future you, which wouldn't go back in the past to make such a change...of course, it could be similar to the plot of Back to the Future 2, and just create an alternate dimensional timeline...and seeing as i haven't seen the movie in a long time, i'm forgetful if it did anything more in the plot.

would still like to change myself in some way though...or perhaps i did go back in time to change myself, only to find that the very fact i went back in time created what i am...*shivers with fear at the thought* in either case, still regret my past self. most people do i would think.

There are two things I'd want to tell my younger self. I'd grab my little 8th grade graduate self and take her aside just as she was on the way to her first band practice at high school (yeah we start learning marching band music early) and tell her a bit about her future just to see her reaction. She'd probably be so weirded out.

2006: See that guy in the back? Yeah...you think he's an upperclassman now because the students seem to know him. But that's because his dad teaches here (you'll have him sophomore year). He's actually a freshman like you. Anyway, you're gonna find he's a funny guy...gonna make you laugh. And if you get a crush on him, that's cool...it's allowed. But don't lose your head. Trying to persue a relationship with him will be a total waste. You can try but you shouldn't continue after high school. You're going to come out of it feeling very angry with yourself. He is not who you're looking for.

*points* THAT guy is. Or at least in my time he is....has been for a few years.

1998: Him? With the mello?

2006: Yep....but you're not going to realize that until you've all graduated and are in college.

1998: I'm sorry future me but...don't you think he looks a little...young. He looks like he's ten years old and skipped a few grades. He must be really really smart. ...is he talking to himself?

2006: No he's never skipped and he's only a little more than 8 months younger that you. He is as smart as you think he is but don't let that scare you. He's still human and he's gonna be a great friend to you in the coming years. ...and yeah he is.

Stop looking so freaked! Geez! He'll be taller than you by sophomore year!

Just...listen to your mother when the time comes and give him a try.

*whispers* He's actually pretty good at kissing.

1998: WHAT?! EWWWWWWW!

Not true. Take two scenarios.

1. You tell your past self something that makes them morbidly afraid of strangers. They never trust the stranger with the phone so therefore you never call them. That's a paradox situation.

2. You tell your past self something that makes them paint their nails green for a week during 1997. That doesn't mean that you'll never call your past self, it just means that for a week, you had green nails. That wouldn't create a paradox

3. Monkey, coconut, dogfish *woof*

Me, I like the idea that each alteration creates a new branch on the tree of time, but I'm a sap like that.

And right. ;)

By Deffinition a Paradox cannot come into being, so either Time travel is impossible, or it creates alternate branches of reality.

I'm of the mind that it would be impossible, and keep telling people as such, but i've heard perception of reality is a personal experience, and we are all feeling our own reality. or maybe that's wrong. just going by memory here.

and this talk reminds me of the movie Happy Accidents actually....a good movie.

Be cool, stay in school.

Don't ride horses on June 23, 2004. Just don't.

Don't chase Rick to the playground!

But then there's the it-already-happened school of time travel thought, as best observed in Dragonflight. That's not technically a paradox, is it?

I think Stephen Hawking's theory that no matter what you do to travel in time, physics stops you like some sort of paradox police, for example many theoretical methods require more energy than in the entire universe.

I probably wouldn't tell myself much, I am who I am now as a result of the things I have and haven't done in the past.

I may perhaps suggest standing up to teachers that don't have a clue what they're talking about. So that day would never have happened like it did, even if it meant I ditched school then and there for the day when it first started - big thing for a 12 year old to do, which is why I never did it :roflol:

And, to have a little more faith in myself but otherwise *shrug*

Well, I can explain how there are no paradoxes: I never listened to anyone when I was a kid. I'd tell my younger self to start listening to certain people, but I doubt it'd work, assuming no alternate realities.

(The mad scientist says that the magical past phone works by magic and is thus not susceptible to the laws of physics. Yeah, right.)

biggest concern with time travel concerns the matter are are created out of: is it transported backwards, taken out of this current reality (which should be impossible), or is the matter you are left behind while you are reassembled with matter from a different state in the past? again, don't really think it can be done...but i hear the new TV series "heroes" has something like this. i wonder how they explain it...
