I am so completely clueless about the battledome.

What are "boosts"? Yes I have read the IDP article but I'm still not sure I understand it.
Are the boosts just your stat numbers? Does a pet with a strength of 20 have the "the 20 boost"? And do they increase only in increments? So that a pet with a strength of 19 actually dose the same damage as a pet with 13?

What are abilities and how do they affect your attack? What do the different things you can pick do? What difference do Fierce Attack, Jump and Attack, Normal Attack, Cautious Attack, and Defend make? And also, my pet is an eyrie and I have Eyrie Scratch, what does that do?

I don't understand how faerie abilities work. I hear lots of talk of "you should get such-and-such faerie ability" But how do you get them? I know you bless your pet with a bottled faerie, but how do you know what ability you'll get? And when you read about faerie abilities on neopets, it says "if your pet's level isn't high enough the faerie won't bless them" how do you know if your pet's level is high enough to be blessed by the faerie?

Now that I've made a complete fool of myself, any help would be appreciated. Thanks. ;)

First off, it's not a dumb question, everyone was new to this once.
The boosts work like this:

At each multiplier, your pet does more damage per icon.
Let's take 35:

The IDB source says this means you have a x1.5 multiplier.

This means that if you use a 6-icon weapon, you are doing 1.5 damage for each icon, or 150% overall. That is 9 damage.
(Please also be aware there is a "luck" factor, so this calculation can be up to 10% more or less.)

As for your other question. Does a pet with say, 35 strength, have the same boost as one with 54? Yes. The multiplier kicks in at each boost on the dot, (the next is 55) and does not increase until you hit the next one.

Edit: On IDB, there is a section on Faerie Abilities. You buy them in user shops or get them as prizes from tombolas, etc. Each elemental faerie has a different set of abilities.

Your pet must be at a certain level to receive these abilities. If you took a fire faerie and used it on a level 7 pet, this would happen:
You would receive Smoke Screen (level 1)- Your pet must be level 1 to be blessed with this ability.

Each time AFTER that, it would receive higher abilities:
Here is the fire faerie list.
http://idb.finalhit.org/?searchtype=pag ... ftype=fire

All of the types have a similar list you can check.

If an ability requires a level 9 pet and you're level 8, it flies away- You've wasted 5-7k.

Oh, I think I get it now. Thanks! ^_^ So the first time you bless your pet with say, a fire faerie, you'd get the first ability on the list, and the second time, the second ability, and so on? Provided of course that your pet has a high enough level.

Okay so what about my last question, about Fierce Attack, Jump and Attack, Normal Attack, Cautious Attack, and Defend?

Those are called "stances." If you use one along with your weapons, it increases the damage you do to your opponent by a certain extra percentage... but it also increases the damage you take from your opponent by that same percentage. Those are:

Cautious attack: no effect
Normal attack: 20%
Jump and attack: 30%
Fierce: 40%
Berserk: 50%

Defend works the same way, but reversed: it reduces the damage you take by 20%, but also decreases the damage you do to your opponent by 20%.

This whole tradeoff thing is why you don't want to use fierce/berserk on a strong unfrozen opponent -- you'll hurt them more, yes, but they'll hurt you more, too. Most good battlers use fierce/berserk only on frozen opponents, because then all 140% or 150% of the attack hits.

Really? I didn't know that. What's the most used stance on unfrozen opponents?

The only stance I ever really use is berserk (on a frozen opponent or a weak unfrozen one)... maybe defend occasionally. If they're not using a faerie ability such as burrow or sink, most battlers will use their strongest species ability instead of a stance (against strong opponents, anyway). The best species abilities usually do six icons (my pet has gelert jump, which does three earth and three air icons). That can really add some extra damage in a fight... for example, my friend sirhatter can do more than 70 points of damage with his nimmo species ability alone (at the 550 strength boost). It's just like getting to use a third weapon.

Do you have to have a certain attack strength to use berserk?

level 50 is required to berserk. and cran is right. fierce/berserk used to be much more common, but the maths dictate that species abilities are always superior to cautious attacks, and most of the time are better than fierce/berserk as well in important close fights. if i know im going to win and just want to win quickly, i will berserk not caring that i lose some unnecssary hitpoints.

as an aside, until your weapons have 10 icons each or more, its especially foolish to fierce attack or berserk.

as for faeries, the single best abilities for faeries are 3 fire faeries for fiery gaze (at level 6), and several earth faeries for BURROW at level 12. burrow once per battle is a pretty useful skill, for nearly any battler, regardless of talent. just use it once on strong and youll see why.

lastly, dont EVER let your power bar run to 0. there are rare circumstances when its ok, but the game theory to explain how rare those circumstaces are is just not worth it.

sorry, this is going to appear really stupid, but why shouldn't you let your power go to 0? what effect does that have?

when you go to 0% power, you can still select whatever ability you want, but NOTHING happens. its like youre stuck on cautious attack for the rest of the season, which is bad, because there is always a better option than cautious attack

Thanks a lot! :D I understand battling much better now.
One last thing, is there a list somewhere of species abilities and what they do?

That should tell you what weapons/abilities each species has.

Be sure to reach level 50! The extra 10% from berserk is ABSOLUTELY necessary, especially with higher level battling.

Meer, thank you for creating this topic.

I have been unable to withdraw from single player battling for about two days now. I wanted to battle a sycamore but I guess due to the lag I didn't actually get in. I have been to the status page about five times at different times. But the Healing Springs Faerie lets me know I'm still in a battle. Is there something else?

Edit: Apparently TNT just cleared out the withdrawn players. Patience was all that was neccesary.
