Just on a side note, the transactions you're desciribing aren't legal in either of those games, and Blizzard frequently suspends a heck of a lot of accounts for trading virtual currency/items for the real world equivalent.

This report has made me very nervous. It doesn't contain enough information to explain exactly what's going on. MTVN could be implementing a system where we can purchase a few special items or they could be basically going to a pay-to-play system, a worst case scenario. There are already several theories on what's going to happen. We need to try and contact Neopets on what's exactly going on, and if necessary, discourage them from going to a new system that could seriously affect the gameplay on Neopets. I have already posted a question on the editorial asking for more details, and I'm likely to e-mail Neopets support on the subject. However, doing this alone will be quite difficult, so I'm hoping that others will help me get some much needed information on this subject. I know it may be a bit much to ask, but I worry about something I do not know much about. If you find anything else on this, please notify me. Thanks.

Users may also be able to pay to advance to different levels of Neopia, the Neopets world.

That's the part that worried me. It could mean many things.

I don't like this trend, but as I don't have any choice in it, I'll just continue to play until A) my interest wanes to the point where I don't want to play anymore; or B) the need to pay begins to interfere with my enjoyment of the site.

There have been rumours, and web pages, floating around out there recently that say that Neopets is going to create a system whereby players will be able to pay real-life money for Neopets items. As a concerned Neopian, I feel that it should be brought to your attention that if these rumours are true, it will pull a lot of players off the site. People more successful in real life will have an unfair advantage on Neopets than people not willing to spend their hard-earned money on something virtual. Please, please, PLEASE say it isn't true! ~leorls
Well, we can't give out many details. Not yet. But we'd like to assure everyone that their worst fears are not coming true. Users will not be able to acquire a Super Attack Pea for $5, nor will anyone be able to buy their way to Neopian fame and fortune. That would be… well, pretty stupid, right? We value our users and respect the world you've helped us create. We would never do anything we thought would unbalance the game, and we don't intend to do so just because real currency is involved!

So no worries. Deep breaths. Everyone breathe.

From the editorial just now...

Hm, I believe them. ^^";[/b]

I don't. >.> I think they're probably just spouting platitudes to shut us up.
But then, I'm cynical and pessimistic by nature.

We'll just have to wait and see how it will really effect the game.

Neopets mobile was the first step to that -- paying for the chance to have a lutari (which I almost did) and for the chance to get lutari beads.

Not shocking, IMHO.

*shrug* I still believe they'll hold their word and Neo won't become pay to play. It'll just give people with money a couple more options on the site. Which was bound to happen. ^^'

NOW, if only they would get around to 'rewards' for older players on the site like they said they would. *coughcough* Been around more than long enough to qualify. XD; (Er.. I should reword that. I mean players with older accounts. Ehehe)

The more I read other stories about this, the more I get the sense that it's just going to be stuff like "be able to dress up your pet", "use any skin/sidebar (without counting it in the stats)", "turn off everyone's annoying NeoHTML", "search for high-rarity items in the yellow search bar" (well, maybe not something quite that obscure), etc.

This seems to be the press release about it:

This new service will enhance the current Neopets world, known as Neopia, by providing users the ability to purchase premium level virtual items for customization and personalization, in addition to those currently available on the site.

*shakes head*

Forgive me if I'm getting the wrong idea (again), but is this a second way of making the Premium service look more expensive, the way AySz88 said it?

Neopets can't really afford to become completely P2P. Their current audiance looks like it's on the youngish side and will be unable to pay for it unless they beg it off of their parents.

This new service that they'll be releasing sounds a lot like the service their teaming up with, Nexon games of Maplestory. MS's Cash Shop items are 90% for show only and it's only a handful of items that actually have an effect on the gameplay. So it's probably going to be exactly how Moonlight Flower is saying it'll be. :)

I personally won't be buying anything (same as I'll never subscribe to Premium or Lutari island), but I've got nothing against Neopets if they do it. *shrugs* Neopets is business, and as long as they don't mess with people who don't pay, I don't see why they can't put this system in.

Now, I'm no optomist, (When I smell flowers I look for the coffin so to speak :P ) But it sounds like exclusive stuff for those people.

Like, pay $5 and get the space faerie as battledome challanger ;)
Or pay $15 and get the wizzy-wwogle paint-brush, available only via this offer or by trading (IE: Not a prize from any games or Random event or what have you)

lol well Neopets P2P? (pay to play... peer to peer lol)... don't think that'll ever happen. Isn't neopets for market research anyway?
