It makes me sick that instead of helping the injured people or poor people or sick people ect., they are hiring lawyers to tell people to remove there red cross sign.

Well, they are still helping them, but they could be doing so much more if they redirected the funding they are using for these lawsuits and such.

Hmm...I seem to be undecided on this.

I mean, fair enogh, they own the symbol, it has become something which we look at and don't think anything of it. But to be honest, does this mean I can copyright a blue triangle?

Are they going to sue children who draw a picture of a hospital with a red cross on it?

Does anyone actually care? And what is the difference between the red and green cross? How do we know someone doesn't own that.

I'm going to make an application to copyright a blue triangle and see what happens.

It'd probably turn out that somebody else has already tried to do so. :P

I once heard that Bill Gates or Donald Trump or someone wanted to copyright the letter E. So every time someone anywhere used an e for any reason, they'd have to pay for it. Imagine if someone was able to do that. LOL

W would b abl to talk to ach othr!

This entire issue is foolish. To think that even more could be done for people who have suffered through horrendous events like floods, earthquakes, fires, etc. This just saddens me. The money that is being used to pay these lawyers and clerks and everyone else involved in processing these actions could be given to towns and counties where disasters have occured, to rebuild. Donations could be given to hospitals and medical care facilities to improve their level of care. I doubt this is what Clara Barton would have wanted. The focus has been lost. Or has the Red Cross become so wealthy that they can afford these illogical measures and still help everyone? -.-

Btw, I did a book report about Clara Barton when I was in high school. I still have the book. It's one of those old books with yellow pages that you have read very delicately. It was a present from my uncle, as are many of my old books. Clara Barton was a wonderful woman. I think it would sadden her that so much money was being taken away from not only the Red Cross, but all the medical facilities who have to changes their images, that could have been used to help people.

Agreed. There was a tornado a bit away from here and so many houses got whiped out. Why not help them? Oh,sorry..I forgot about the trademark.

Money truly does make the world go 'round - even in the most foolish/stupid ways imaginable.

lol. That's a good one.

It is pathetic that they're doing this. It's, like everyone has said, a waste of money that could be put to better uses. I'd be angry if I donated money to the Red cross and they spent it on something like this.

What are they even trying to protect? Are they afraid that people won't realize that a red cross ultimately stands for The Red Cross? Everybody does! Everybody knows what the Red cross is and that it's their sign. A red cross also seems like a symbol of health and care, and maybe to some a sign of hope, no matter where it's used. Now that's getting taken away and limited to the actual organization. "Let's copyright a symbol that we basically stole in the first place."

Really, this reminds me of the crap that goes on in the art community about somebody stealing a pose or a certain bodypart on a character.

I was telling my roommate about this, just as something to talk about. She was as surprised as the rest of us. One thing she thought of, being someone who travels out of the country for vacation pretty regularly.

That is on most international city maps, a red cross is used as a generic symbol for hospitals. No matter what language you do (or don't speak or read), that symbol lets you know where to go if you get sick or hurt. Are all the map companies going to have to pull their maps, think up a new symbol and reprint them?

I will continue to donate, but I will donate items, not money. That way I can feel that I am hopefully helping someone but at the same time not adding to the legal fund coffer.
