I did that a few times with my old Nokia.
It still lives.

So, I'm going to be making a battle suit of old, discarded, Nokia phones.
I WILL BE INVINCIBLE!

Is it a 3310? 3310's are nearly invincible! I'm not sure how mine stopped working in the end.

It's dead this morning, and as it's my only phone (I don't have a land line) i'm going to go this morning and buy a new one.
Now for the question.
I'm on a plan with my provider, am I able to simply buy a cheap phone some where and take it to them and have my number put on that phone? Or do I have to buy a phone directly from them?

Just make sure the phone is compatible with the provider you have and I think you'll be okay. You should call up a local representative and double check with them first, probably.

Well i'm an idiot.

I went all over town to find a phone. And ended up buying an ugly one from Walmart. With the guarantee that I can return the phone within 30 days so long as everything from the case is in the phone.
So.

I get home. Hate the new phone. Decide to rather vehemently plug in the old phone.

Guess what starts working? THe old phone. It's charging. The screens fine. It's all fine. I'm very happy. And now i'm going to go return the devil phone from Walmart. I hates it.

I've totally done that before so you're not alone.

Oh god, those are amazing.

Throw it at a wall a few times, run it over with a car, it's still going to work. It's incredible.

Nokia 5140 is somewhat like that

Yay, it's fixed. If it ever happens again:
1. Smash it with a hammer. Haaard.
2. Throw the Holy Hand Grenade at it.
3. Scatter the remain across several galaxies.
4. Think about how much you want the phone.
5. Come yell at me for this advice.
I'd say "rinse, repeat", but you already rinsed it.
