I despise chatspeak
It annoys me to no end when people can't be bothered to press two extra keys on their keyboard.

I'm fine with it - I often use it slightly on MSN but I try and keep it legible on here ^^

I'll use lol, brb (well, sometimes I'll actually put "be right back."), sometime's I'll also put "c-ya". Most use "lol" because I overdo "haha/hehe/hah/heh" and need something else to use. Most of the time if I'm spouting out anything that's chatspeak, I'm usually joking around and it shouldn't be taken seriously, since most of the time it's sarcasm. (though sometimes I'll use "lol" in the same way as "ORLY?" would be used, though only on forums)

I don't like putting "u" for "you", though. That's one of the things that REALLY bothers me. Same with "wat/what" and "r/are".

If someone messages me with: "Wat r u doin?", and I don't know them well enough to know that they don't usually do chatspeak, I probably wouldn't reply to them.

I can put up with it so long as I know the person on the other side is capable of intelligent conversation (meaning I've seen them NOT use it often in the past), and I don't have to be expected to translate every time I talk to them.

I really don't like it. I'm fine with things like lol or omg, becuase they've kind of become words themselves, and it is a pain to write them out all the time. I absolutely despise leet, and don't see why anyone would want to use it since it would take longer and it just makes you look immature. stuff like u for you, 4 for for, b for be, I can't stand. It honestly doesn't take all that much effort to write out two more characters, and it looks stupid. Intentional mispellings are a pain as well. Why put effort into making yourself look dumb?

I'm slightly more tolerant of it in IM and stuff like that, but on forums, all but a little bit of minor stuff like lol or omg annoys me to no end.

Let's put it this way: if everyone on this forum suddenly decided chatspeak was really cool and never typed intelligently again, I'd take the nearest pen and stab my eyes out.

Not really, but I'd so want to. There are very few chatspeak usages I'm willing to deal with (most of them are versions of "lol" and "omg".) It's stupid. It's pointless. It's an example of how society is going downhill. People who use it for speed should learn to type faster, and people who use it to be "cool" or whatever...well...those people are really beyond words, because I can't find any for them.

In seventh grade, my history teacher told us that some people had used "2" and "4" in their essay question on the test. I was sitting there, and my thoughts went like this:

Seventh-grade Tyma's mind wrote:
O_o Seriously?! That's bad enough online, but who would do that on a test? I had no idea I was sitting in a classroom with twenty brainless freaks!

A kid in my class this year wrote an essay about the horrors of chatspeak, and he stated that kids were actually forgetting how to spell because of chatspeak, and using it in circumstances where intelligent writing is actually required. I rest his case.

I can't stand chatspeak. To be honest, I don't even see the benefits of it - it would take me longer to think of ways to shorten words than to just type properly. I do put up with it from my friends on MSN, but then I don't tend to talk to them on MSN much (largely because of the large amounts of chatspeak they feel the need to use).

So yea, I don't use it at all. Only exception would be sometimes in texts if I'm trying to keep it to one text...but if I have to go too far, I just pay the extra 10p for it to go into two texts.

I think they're going out of their way to toss a few sexual connotations in there.

After trawling through pages of Misc Disc posts in order to find this thread, I'd like to also bring up this PSA made by the lovely Fidds:

I think it's rather appropriate for this thread.

I think, if you can't be bothered to make your posts look nice, I shouldn't have to bother reading them. That goes for chatspeak, misuse of capitalization or punctuation, excessive emoticons, et cetera. I know that sounds snotty to some people, but I've found that people who take their time with their posts are far more likely to have something to say.

I'm okay with lol, rofl, lol, brb and all that. But things like l8er annoys me.

But if things get even worse. I take a much longer time to decipher it and will get into a bad mood if I continue to not being able to read it.

I usually avoid to chatspeak or talk to people who chatspeak (not wholly) for a long time. My friend chatspeaks (kind of? lyk dis) and i have a hard time trying to get what he's saying.

I never use anything outside of lol, brb, etc. I can decipher it without a problem if it's not too bad, but I'd rather have people using proper grammar and spelling.

I can't stand chatspeak. The only things I can tolerate are acronyms like lol and brb, and I personally shorten "though" to "tho" sometimes (don't ask me why, it's a peculiarity). Excessive exclamation points anger me, as well as excessive emoticons and posts consisting of one word (for example, "lol").

Only one thing bugs me more than chatspeak: lack of grammar and language skills! You'd think that by the time someone learns to type, they should have a decent command of language, but you'd be surprised. One of my pet peeves is when people misuse they're/their/there and you're/your. Some people I know in college still do that *pulls hair out* I'll be the first to admit that I'm not perfect, but at that point it's like...c'mon. Form proper sentences!

Gosh, I really am turning into an English-major brat. ;)

I find chatspeak really annoying! acronyms (lol, brb, lol) etc are fine, but shortening your words, and things like that, are so annoying. i dont understand why people do it.

I can understand it in text messages where you have limited characters though, but even then i try and write my message normally and then shorten words if it's too long.

If you spend all your spare time typing in chatspeak or similar, you're going to really struggle when you have to write normally at school/work, in my opinion anyway.
