Why does a boys name have to be first!

People generally give their sons more generic first names than their daughters. In some circles, it's seen as tacky to have a daughter with a common first name. I know dozens of guys named David, but I only know one girl named Mary. Thus, it's pretty hard for a girl's name to be the most common with a clear majority; parents are always trying to pick the most unique name for their baby girls.

This trend is starting to carry over into male names, though. I used to always see little boys named Chris whose sisters were named Neveah or something, but lately I've been seeing a surprising number of little boys named Hamlet.
