As some dude pointed out, there is NO WAY that can be an actual courtroom?!

And if it is, I'm going to Antarctica, to be ruled by our Penguin Overlords first hand.

I love this show when I get a chance to watch it.

IIRC During the beginning of Judge Judy we are told that courtroom is real but the accused are played by actors.

Judge Judy annoyed me so much more than the defendant. Even though she did scam the woman, kind of, it's not like these scams are unheard of. I disliked the way she attacked her private life, I seriously felt the comments about the children were inappropriate... and the bit about the intelligence of the woman. Irk.
But that's television, I guess.

Judge Judy is a real court. Small claims court, specifically. Much different from regular court- no attorneys, and evidence doesn't have to be entered in the regular manner. The more... obnoxious judges in small claims court generally end up on TV, but yeah, it's real.

Can't watch the video(my connection doesn't allow me to watch videos unless I'm willing to wait hours), but I just wanted to say that Judge Mathis is so much better than Judge Judy at all times.

I think Judge Judy is hilarious at times (though I don't like any of those daytime court shows), but I also agree that she went a bit overboard with this, at least with the "job" and "She doesn't like to work, she likes to make babies" comment. I mean, I was laughing, but it still shouldn't have been said.

She could have degraded her in many more effective, and yet tasteful ways.

It's not really a real court, maybe half of a court. Any court that pays you $5000 to go there shouldn't be called a real court.

The weight thing was inappropriate to me. Us fat people can't help it sometimes, just cause we have lots of blubber it doesn't mean our feelings are any more cushioned. :P Actually all the points Judy brought up about the lady's personal life were rude. And she really did not give the lady a fair chance - I don't think the woman even got to speak her part. Though the 4. something ounces part was clever.

I've got to agree with Judge Judy on at least one point--why on Earth does anyone (especially defendants) go on her show?

I'm fairly sure that while the government is not in any way involved in the TV courtrooms, the people involved in the cases (when they aren't actors) sign a contract agreeing to allow Judge Judy/Mathis/Joe Brown/Alex/Reinhold to perform arbitration. They agree to be legally bound by the TV judges' rulings. However, people often try to wriggle out of these contracts, usually citing the fact that it's not a real court. No idea how successful they tend to be, though.

Having been in real small claims court way too many times in my life, I can attest to the fact that there are a lot of Judge Judy wannabes out there.

Well, the cases are real, of course, it's just that even the defendant is gaining money after the case. The case can only go up to $5,000, and the defendant starts out with $5,000 and gets whatever is left from what they lose (if any, or they leave with nothing, and losing nothing if the charges against them are $5,000). The defendant doesn't really have anything to lose.

It's just a mess, really. Much different than normal small-claims court, it's not a court in the fact that they're almost bribed to attend the case, and can still get out of the rulings if they try hard enough.

Almost makes me want to go on there...

...almost. :P

It's court shows like that which make me lose faith in the human race. Because even if they ARE actors, you KNOW that there are people like the plantiffs and defendants out there in real life.
