I think it would be nice if we could "link" our side and main accounts together. Some other websites allow you to do this with multiple accounts. One example is yuku.com, a messageboard service. If you log into one of your accounts on yuku, you can switch to another account without logging out.

If we had this feature with neopets, they could make it so that you could transfer your pets between your own accounts, without having to abandon it first. I know that the purpose of the pound is basically to get rid of pets. If I pound a pet, I basically have to take my chances. I realise that TNT doesn't want to change this, because it discourages cheaters who would try to sell neopets. However, for those people who only want to transfer their pets to themselves, that problem does not exist.

Linking accounts would also allow TNT to come with a design where you could directly send neopoints to your sides without having to go through the trading post. That makes things simpler than having the rule that you're not allowed to use shops or trades on your sides, except when you're using junk trades to transfer neopoints to yourself.

This would also make things easier on TNT. It would be easier for them to see at a glance which accounts are from the same person.

So am I the only one who thinks this is a good idea?

Its a good idea, and its a shame there would be tons of losers ready to take advantage of it. If they ever did implement it, there'd definitely need to be a way to limit the amount of switches possible, so that scammers or pet lenders wouldnt just claim a different account each day as their side in order to secure transfers.

Ive always wanted to permanently merge all my accounts into one. All my pets could be right there, all the random avatars I got on my side right there, all the sidebars, neofriends, guilds, and so on.

I believe there is a linking feature on Neopets Premium, although I'm not entirely sure what the feature entails.
There's never going to be a safe transfer feature. TNT discourages transfers, and because they've remained so strongly against it, the chances of them changing their minds are pretty much nil.
Most of the other features would also be too subject to abuse for TNT's taste. Someone scams you out of your account by saying "Change your email and I'll link you to my account so we can transfer pets!" Then they grab your account and transfer everything to theirs. Or, they get you to link their account to yours, and transfer everything away, then unlink the accounts. Yes, TNT could design safety features to work around these flaws, but it would most likely be
A) still somewhat subject to abuse and
B) so crippled by safety features as to be useless.

As far as I know, the only thing that could be considered a linking feature is having an alias account. All that means is that you are allowed to have portal and premium board access and no ads. I wish we did have that feature, though.

As much as the legit users would love it, I can see such a function being abused to no end. :/ Sad, but true.

If it was ever implemented, it would probably be very limited to try and avoid this from happening. Then again, the feature really entails no more risks then any other feature neopets has, it just adds some new ways to scam people.

Obviously there would have to be a limited total number of linked accounts, probably 5, seeing as how thats the official max legit number. The way I've always thought of it, one account would be the "main" account, and could not be changed, or prehaps could, for a hefty np fee. The ability to link would make it easier to feed pets, and would prevent you from using side accounts to do things your not supposed do(no more editorial questions on, 'can we do this'?). Basically, my idea of linked accounts roughly translates to combining your accounts together, with very rough dividing lines between them. You can more directly access items and pets in the other accounts, and more them between accounts.

Again though, it comes back to the fact that it would be abused. But then, no more abused then anything else on the site...all it means is that current scams would be altered slightly to make way for the new feature. I don't think it would cause an increase in scamming attempts really, just change how they try to do it. :/

The only problem is that it would make it easier for someone who gained access to your account illegally to steal things from you.

I think it's a cool idea. But yeah, too much possibility for abuse. :/

I wish they would just do away with side accounts altogether and let us have 20 pets on one account. That would make so much more sense.

xD

Simplify simplify! If only they WOULD...I mean, there is almost no reason at all for side accounts now. We can have both a gallery and a shop, plus divisions to galleries...and I don't think there is any reason to have more then one gallery...so basically, the only reason now to have side accounts, is more pets.

Is there a real reason why we cannot have more than 4 pets on an account? I know that Adam has 5 pets, so clearly that much at least, can be done. I've seen pet sites where you have 10-20 pets, so I really cannot think of a reason why neopets cannot make it so. :/ They just...don't. To taunt us, I think.

It's too bad that it would be open to some abuse. If a hacker got your password, they'd be able to claim your account as a side account, which would result in a mess of complications. I didn't even think of that. It sucks that a games site attracts so many cheaters. It would be awesome if this idea were viable.

You quoted Thoreau...that's awesome, lol (whether it was intentional or not).

I think the main reason TNT keeps the pet number as-is is because this isn't a "collect as many pets as you can" type game. They probably envision it being best to focus your attentions on a few pets, rather than spreading yourself thin over several.

Besides, with the increased hungriness, it would be uber-expensive to feed more than 5 I think, lol.

But people DO have more than 4 pets, thats what the whole point of this topic is. xD It would be easier for people if they didn't have to log onto different accounts and feed 20 different pets that way. It really wouldn't be that expensive, you could still just buy ommletts/jellys...

Meh, I meant to emphasize the "focus on a few pets" part.

Also, I thought people enjoyed "themed" accounts. I'm toyed with the idea of opening a side just so I could have a theme.

Haha, no worries. :)

Some users create an account, then pick a "theme" to revolve it around. Someone may create an account with the intent of making it Darigan-centric, for example, with (eventual) Darigan pets, Darigan gallery, Darigan lookup, etc. The possibilities are endless, hehe! I know quite a few people who have done a royal theme (Royal Pets, royal-related gallery, etc).

EDIT: In that case it would be nice to be able to "link" accounts, just to see if someone has gone themed-crazy lol. If linking did exist, I think it would be best as an option...
