It is sad that board jousting has spread over to PPT to contemplate. It seems that such stupid activity is what spurred the GUP and then the Anti-GUP movements. A group of a certain type disliked boards about pet adoption / bragging so much that they went out to upset a group of a different certain type who post said boards.

Although I think it is mean spirited, and I think many PPT members are very much against mean spiritedness, I am withdrawing from involvement over such. GUP thinks such things are funny. They can get thier humor where they like I guess, but that is not for me. Anti-GUP people are outraged and retaliatory. That is not me either. I will continue playing the game with the good spiritness I've always tried to employ. If that includes releasing colored pets into the pound, then so be it.

I don't hear anybody having any arguments about how few of the people really do ruin the fun for others by stealing pets that were meant for yourself or someone else.. Everytime someone's lost a pet, there's like "Ow, too bad. But hey, they are allowed to do it, it's legal, once it's in the pound it's fair game for all, etc etc." But people adopting pets to change them to standard pets raises such a commotion?

How is it stealing a pet? The pound is fair game, everyone knows that transfers aren't 100% safe.

What most of the disagreement is about is the group deliberately looking for these pets and deciding that no-one is going to have them.

TNT has stated in a recent Editorial that they will not tolerate 'back-seat modding' ( Premium boards where really bad for that), but here is a group of people that in essence are doing just that.

GUP are saying that no-one should be able to adopt a painted pet from the pound but earn it. They then take the painted pets and turn them in to something else deliberately, so no-one else can have them.

Of course, it isn't against TNT's rules, but it is hardly fair play.

It is the principal of the matter that bugs me. TNT have enforced rules and regulations on us about fair play and no-one getting an advantage of someone else, but here is a group of people (group, not just a single individual) who are judge and jury.

TNT made the pound and knew people would put painted pets in it, so why in the Editorial did they make it seem such a crime to do that?

Stampsyne, I agree 100 percent. This is something that has gotten way out of hand.

Hee, I know I'm late on this one but I find the whole GUP thing hilarious. I do honestly believe it's a fantastic idea, and incredibly funny. People who are getting completely worked up about this should maybe learn to lighten up a little, it's not like there's enough of them to snatch up every single painted pet in the pound.

Plus there have been people like myself who zap (or train) and release on a regular basis for ages, I say the GUP meerly adds to the variety of life ;) I may now morph my battle pet into a green uni if I ever need to do a transfer - people are much less likely to snap her up that way.

I think it's kinda sad really. That these people feel the need to even do this in the first place. Personally, I lab pets with the intention of putting them back in the pound for someone to adopt. Hopefully they end up with someone who really wants a painted pet, but if not, oh well, i'm still gonna lab another one.

Why do they really care if people don't work hard for painted pets? What difference does it make to them? Sad.

I have always played nice and will continue to play nice. Some people are just malicious, thats the way the world is.

Yeah, and TNT would really find that funny. You're comparing something illegal with something perfectly ok that merely annoys you. It's like comparing a drunk driver to a driver who perposely had a huge exhaust fitted just to make a lot of noise. The noise annoys you, but it's not illegal and isn't doing anything wrong (baring the whole "environment thing, since all cars affect that! Bloody 4X4s!).

Your point would be valid... except that you can be arrested for excessive noise. A too loud car is bad for the environment, annoying, and can potentially be loud enough to make it difficult for the driver to hear sirens and be able to react if an emergency vehicle is coming up behind them or to the side.
The same goes for loud music... it's annoying... and too loud, you can be pulled over, ticketed, and even arrested.
(I only know because I work in the news and we're actually doing a story on it as I type and don't do the work I'm paid to do :P )

I didn't state at what level the noise was and wasn't going to. Mainly because I assumed (wrongly) that people would understand my point rather than resorting to nit picking. The laws and rules you refer to depend on a number of factors including the country/area, the volume and amount of people it affects. But you allready know that don't you, as you said, you work in the news.

It's like a Green Uni Revolution. =D It's a shame the MPs will inflate though. I like the idea of seeing nothing but Green Unis in the pound!

I'm amazed that the pound sitters who spam the Help Chat with bragging boards didn't get this much negative attention. I'd say deserve it more than the GUP. The GUP is just a bit of craic. It's not directly affecting anyone.

It allways makes me wonder how people's minds work when I hear words like "malicious" banded about like this. I'd hardly call adopting a pet from the pound (which anyone can do) and doing with it what you wish "malicious".

Cookie stealing is malicious, Scamming someone out of their account/np is malicious, Writing threatening messages via neomail or the boards is malicious. But adopting a pet from the pound in order to morph them into a Green Uni, malicious? Only to you if you're the one sat in the pound looking for a readily painted pet and missed it. How unfortunate.

This thing has been blown way out of proportion. Some people here and on the neoboards who think the GUP are wrong are being incredibly wrong themselves. Pot calling the kettle black? I hardly think resorting to name calling and wrongly judging these people's sanity and motives is in any way "better".

I still think this whole thing is great craic. Learn to see the funny side.

I consider it malicious when a person adopts a rare pet from the pound for the sole purpose of changing it to a much less desirable pet just to prevent anyone else from having a nice looking pet. The intent is malicious. And I take the definition of malicious in this case to be mischievous in motivation or purpose.

I personally could care less if they keep doing it or not, i'm still gonna lab unwanted pets with the hope that someone who wants it can have it.

Thats all I have to say on the matter.

Mmm well late-ish on this last weekend's crisis (frankly I much prefer this to cookie grabbers or whatever)

I went through the adoptions page awhile ago for a good ten minutes one green uni no painted ones

Its funny as I've been thinking about getting a lab map for my side account to do the foster for a better colour deal. I'm probably still gonna do it though I'm more likely to pick up a green uni if I see one now. (was planing on picking something with one of those bad number names before). If they like they can keep morphing them back to a green uni. Suits my sense of mischief to zap the green ones and to see other pets turn into them.

I also think its funny that the whole uproar came out for Saint Patrick's Day mayhaps the GUP came out on the chat boards for the hoilday?

I do think the people adopting the green uni's and poisoning them is awful (by the way does the poisoning stick through adoption? haven't gotten any pounded pets before and my sis got her's so long ago she can't rember if it was sick or not when she got it.) is just mean spirited folks who want to brag off on the chatboards with out spending any neopoints (or next to none) the morphers are spending theirs to make the unis and the zappers spent theirs on the lab map in first place.

Anybody else rember those Magical Meerca Plushies you used to get from Meerca Chase? I'm betting if those were still around this group wouldn't be making Unis

Yes, I have adopted a few pets that were sick, a visit to the healing springs does the trick though

After reading the thread (wowzers!), I might as well offer my two cents, that I'm sure others have posted as well, but I might as well unify all of my disparate views, if only for my own sanity.

The GUP really isn't a bad thing, in my mind. If you're adopting a pet for its stats, or its color, then does the neopet mean less to you if it's green? Taking it to an extreme real-life situation: you have two puppies that you can adopt. Both are identical personality-wise, health-wise, age-wise, and breed-wise; one, however, is a gorgeous white dog with perfect black and red spotting, the other is a solid white with no spotting. Is one less deserving of your attention than the other? Many people, probably myself included, would instantly gravitate towards the good-looking dog, ignoring the otherwise perfectly equivalent white one. GUP's goal is, for all intents and purposes, to shave as many dogs as possible, leaving them equally naked.

That being said, the reasons behind their mission are the sticking point for me, and I can honestly say I don't know why they're doing what they're doing it. Motives, to me, are the defining characteristic of an activity; result is secondary.

If they're painting pets (or shaving puppies) for the purpose of mischief or evil, then that's just not cool. If they're doing it for the express purpose of making hard for you or I to get a painted pet, then that's also not cool.

On the other hand, if they are doing this simply because they like Green Unis, or because they are trying to make a point that Green Unis are or ought to be worth just as much to a reasonable pet owner as a fire scorchio (or whatever), then perhaps it's valid. Certainly it's valid. I like red cars; would it be wrong for me to buy as many cars as I can, paint them red, and resell them?

Is a fire scorchio that much better? Buying a paint brush is as much of an affirmation of status or wealth as finding the pet in the pound - maybe more so. What we earn in life we value most, I think.

Same with the secret laboratory map, or even basic morphing potions. And paint brushes are given away randomly (though not frequently enough in my mind - a debate for another day). So paint brushes, while prices will always continue to rise, will also always be available.

For those who choose to adopt pets, lab up their stats, and release them again, a good question is: will you not lab Green Unis? A pet that gets labbed has just as much chance of becoming a Red Lupe as it does staying a Fire Scorchio. So what you adopt means nothing - what matters is what you put back. And if it's morphed into a Green Uni, then not all (or even most) of your work is lost - it's still likely got different stats, which a 15k morphing potion won't take away.

Perhaps this is my own habits showing through - my only pet is a labber, and I don't much care what he, or she at the moment, looks like. I have an end goal in mind, and I've got the morphing potion set aside so that if I'm ever bored with labbing Tuonos, a yellow Lupe he'll be. I think, in the end, the white puppy is just as good a pet as the glossy show dog. Sure, my attention is drawn by fancy painted pets, but caring for them is the real key.

No. That's just a coincidence. The Green Uni Morphing Potion is the cheapest going, and for that reason they chose that. The GUP were arround before Paddy's weekend as far as I know.

I know that the GUP's been around for a while, but the influx of questions to the editorial and the more frequent chat board brags coming out the week or so before St Pat's is kinda amusing to me because of the wear green for St Pat tradition and now all the uni's are out and about and in neopian's minds for the holiday.

Shapu, I think they're claiming that they do it because they just love green unis, and maybe some of them even do, but I've seen a lot of people create a boards that say "Hey, I just picked up a _______ from the pound, should I GUP it so no one else can get it har har har?" And it's suspicious to me that they're doing this with the cheapest morphing potion available. I don't think they like the pet itself, I think they like that they can get away with this without spending too much.

I think the entire thing is completely and utterly hilarious, even more so the Green Uni Zapping Project. If that's happening, I'm SO in! Can I be a Officer of Zap? :D
