True story. (Sorry about the length.)

A few weeks ago, I posted some stuff on YouTube. Nothing special, actually. Just something goofy and a response to the video of a more popular user. These few weeks passed, and I hadn't checked the comments on the videos at all.

Today, I was looking at the response video, which, as I figured, had about ten or so comments. The original video's creator thought it was nice, a few people liked the idea that she create a YouTube army, and one said I should just admit that I think she's cute. I expected that sort of stuff. The most recent one was left Monday. It stated matter-of-factly, "You need to die."

Thank you for pointing that out. I should have realized that posting a video that not everyone loves is a crime that deserves nothing less than death. Please excuse me, I'll get right to hanging myself. Actually, never mind. I'll let you do the honors. In fact, I think you'd be the best person for the job. After all, you have that same spirit of unreasonable, unabashed hatred that someone in Virginia also felt on Monday.

Wait, maybe you're not so bad. That's just one comment on YouTube. I'm getting so far ahead of myself. But, just for curiosity's sake, let's stick your username into Google. Okay, I see now, you're not really so evil and twisted. I think what really convinces me of that is what I found on some of your online forum posts. How could I have suspected you of being a bad person? After all, your idea that a guy kill his friend and rape that friend's girlfriend for revenge isn't evil, it's simply brilliant! How could I even imagine comparing you to the likes of Cho Seung-hui?

In case you didn't get it, that last paragraph was sarcasm. Unfortunately, far too many people can rationalize wishing for the death of another human being. If only more people cared.

The internet breeds anonimity. People feel like they are able to hide easily and thusly they also feel that they are able to get away with more hateful comments. Were you at a video screening or an art show or something of the like you would never hear a comment "You should die" to your face. Perhaps someone may mutter it in passing to a friend or a colleague, but the likelihood of you hearing it in person is very low.
I'm sorry that you are bothered by this, I know I would be too. But that is the harsh reality of the internet. We see words and not faces and often forget that there are real people sitting behind the computer screen.

Ahh...internet bullying. Mostlikely this is a young kid who is quiet and shy and gets picked on, or an adult who gets pushed around. Since you can't see who they are, or know what they are like or what other people that know them think of them, they can bully other people and pretend to be who they are not. Sadly it makes them feel better about themselfs

You know what I hate even more? When people make snide comments online and then add a cheery emoticon to lighten the mood.
Imagine if, instead of "You need to die" it said "You need to die "
Wouldn't that be worse?
Yes, it's great fun being insulted by random people you've never met on the internet. Just imagine them as Comic Book Guy, only with fewer brain cells. If that doesn't make you feel better, imagine their computers exploding. They deserve it.

I don't see why you're so riled up over such a trivial, anonymous online comment.

And I think it is utter nonsense to even think of comparing a thoughtless online comment to the VT tragedy.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I have no idea how the VT tragedy fits in with this at all. o_0

Eh. I just got pretty ticked that somebody left it almost immediately after the shooting.

Its too bad about that. I don't like browsing youtube because of all the awful comments. If you don't like a video, it is sooo easy to just not comment, leave constructive criticsm or to simply say that you don't like it.

Oh that's right. Because the past is the past, what's done is done, and we can look forward to someone ruining tomorrow too.

It's on our minds. We make connections to things that we're thinking about, even if they aren't necessarily logical connections. And it's an example of extreme behavior that we are all now painfully familiar with.



Yeah, I've never understood that. It's like how when you're talking to a dog using your singsong voice, getting him all happy, even if the words are along the lines of "You wanna go to the vet? Get a shot? Get fixed? Huh? Do you? Yes you do! Yes you DO!"

Well it's great that your comment has absolutely nothing to do with what he said. Great job.

Seriously this is not the place to turn things into an argument. Keep the fighting off the boards please. You two should both know better.

Rest assured I'm not trying to instigate anything here - but, I too, am curious - perhaps Setekh could clarify the relevancy of his post?

My point -As I should know by know people often have no idea what I'm on about- is that because thirty two people were shot a few days ago, doesn't mean the world has stopped turning.
For example, if my mother were to die tomorrow, I can safely say I wouldn't give a flying hoot what happened in America because it is irrelevant to my personal sphere of influence.
Just like a Personal assault upon your name would still hurt you, even if a billion souls were to come down with some illness.

Basically, A personal attack means more than a tragedy, because it's just that -Personal.
