Ok, so I just bought Pokemon Diamond of eBay for my brother. Because no one else I know will buy it... I got Express Post, so it will arrive in 1-2 business days, but I'll hide it until I get Pearl, which should arrive in 8-12 business days. Great.

I'm not supposed to know, but my husband bought me a DS lite and pokemon diamond for my birthday. . . *does back-flip*

Does anyone know which pokemon is best to start off with? I always start off with the fire types but the little bird-like one is really really cute!! <3

Not sure it would matter cause your rival always picks the opposite. But you usually start out in a foresty-area I think..so.. fire would be good I guess..I'd just get whatevers cute though honestly :p

I wish I had a DS.

Chimchar (the fire one) is also fighting, so it or the water type work. The first boss is rock type. I'm ashamed to admit I don't know the chart well enough to comment on the grass type's strength.

I have it memorized. call me a Pokémaniac if you will.

Grass is weak to 3 elements if pure: Flying, Fire and Bug. Of couse, the vast majority is also Poison, so add PSychic and remove bug if it is.

Grass is strong vs. Water and Ground and Rock. Most Rock types are Ground too, so grass can own them. Then again, water can too... And from memory, Water has only 2 weaknesses: Grass and Elec.

Here's a nice Type Chart from gamefaqs: http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/ds/file/925601/45026

After looking at that chart, Water>Grass

It doesn't really matter which starter you pick. They're all going to have weaknesses, but it's not like that is the only pokemon you're going to get. The type you pick just effects how you build a team around it. The only thing you might have to worry about with starters is the first gym, but since it's rock, both grass and water are no problem. Fire sucks against rock, but by the time you get to the first gym you'll likely have evolved once already making it half fighting, so agian, no problem there. I just picked the water one because it was too cute :) Next time I play through I'll pick a different one.

I picked Chimchar and he turned out to be ugly as heck...

I'm gonna pick Turtwig, I love the whole island thing, and my brother is picking Chimchar, who I would pick if I didn't already hate fire/fighting types because of Sapphire, which I started playing a few weeks ago, and Combusken and.. generally yeah. Then we shall trade, for extra experience and less weakness against our rivals. Which won't do much at all.

Now that i've leveled up my Turtwig to level 18 and evolved it in the first patch of grass, it's time to start playing the game!

Diamond/Pearl specific question: where's the earliest place you can trade? General Pokemon question: can you control traded pokemon without any badges, if they're under level 10 or 20?

Technically, you can trade as soon as you get your first badge and you can go to the wifi room and GTS centre.

Once you get your first badge, you can handle traded pokemon up to level 15 I think.

And trading is quite fun... I need to check if anyone accepted my request for an Abra...
