I'm very lucky that the name Wind was taken on Subeta, then >>

EDIT: I thought that 420chan (like it's previous incarnations) is completely anonymous. Can they have copyright on anything?

Yes - that's how Wikipedia can keep their content open. All contributors have the copyright on their own contributions, even if they're anonymous. Contributors release their work under the GFDL license when they submit.

For "longcat", though, it's probably close to impossible for any one person to actually claim and assert their copyright (i.e. indicate that Subeta has no permission for use). A communal/sitewide claim is actually probably the next best thing - though a DoS attack isn't exactly the best next step after that.

DoS attacks are for newbies, who don't know any other way to "hack" than to flood the website with Pings.

Yeah. A lot of people who try to say they're 1337 h4x are just annoying script kiddies.

"hacking" when it comes to websites, doesn't exist, anyway. Unless they're running on PHP/MySQL/Perl, or whatnot.

Hacking = The act of finding a error/glitch in the code, which could be used maliciously.

420chan's owner has revealed his/her/its email address on his/her/its website. I would suggest blocking the AIM and email addresses in case they stray onto a subeta or PPT forum where we may be posting those things. The information I found on the site was

"# AIM: -removed-
# Email: -removed-

Edit: I just got flamed by the above email addresses.

MayEdit: Please do not double post. If you were the last to post and you have something to add, please use the edit button in the upper right corner of your post. Also, please do not reveal anyone's e-mail address or AIM username without their consent. :)

Oh gosh! I don't even completely understand this. But I joined Subdea or whatever it's called one day since I waws bored and never played it again. So can someone explain this in a way that a 13 year old can understand? But I do know this: CHANGE PASSWORD!ut I want details. Darn my curiosity.

I really wouldn't freak out too much about this fiasco. Just make darn sure that you use different passwords for each site you belong to. And make sure that your passwords are a combination of upper and lower case, plus numerals and symbols.

This "war" between Subeta and 420chan has been blown way out of proportion to whatever problem the "longcat" initiated.

I, for one, am glad I signed up on Subeta. It's a nice site, even though they do need more games! My user name is completely different than the one I use on Neopets, as is my password. ;)

Looking to buy Snowbunny Stamp and Sticky Snowflake Stamp. If you're selling, please PM me!

420chan, a site full of trolls, is mad at Subeta for stealing a meme, so they're using a DoS attack on them, and have gained entry into the website.

I'm just wondering....Is there anyway for either Subeta or 420chan to sic lawyers on the other party? Or does the fact that both of them could be in different nations kinda nullifies the chance of that happening?

...I mean both DoS and copyright infringement doesn't sound exactly legal....

Then again, I'd really like to see someone proving their copyright over 'longcat'...

You cannot copyright a meme, or the idea of a 'long cat'. That's absurb.

DoS attacks are very common-- the amount of money it costs to take someone to court over it is much more than the amount of money you will obtain from it.

Any troll with common sense would use an Anonymous proxy anyway.

Longcat originally came from 4chan, anyways. As far as I know, it was a picture of the owner Moot's cat at first. That's what I heard.

Right now, it isn't even about Longcat.

They just want Subeta DOWN.

They're also going about saying Subeta has lots of 'copyright infringement' besides their precious Longcat. Like the Aerie to Neopet's Eyrie, the Trow dolls versus the Troll dolls irl.

A lot of it though is covered under parodies, and Neopets knows about Subeta. If they thought the Aerie was copyright infringement, they'd have already done something about it, and Subeta would have changed the pet.

I play Subeta more than I play Neo these days.

The Eyrie and Aerie actually seem to be based on two different mythological animals(the Eyrie's a griffin, and the Aerie looks like a hippogryph--note the hooves on the back legs). And while Aerie and Eyrie are two variants on the same word, it's related to eagles' nests and therefore such a word could have been chosen by Subeta without them copying Neopets intentionally. 420chan's stretching to argue copyright infringement in that case.

Now that I think of it.... Is it just me, or does the fiasco seem to be about trademark issues rather than copyright....

(even though trademark do need to be registered....)

Unless the original argument was about the idea of a long cat...which I'm pretty sure that I've seen that a lot my kindergarten days =.=

I've had like five Gaia announcements in two days. XP

GaiaOnline Admin wrote:
Hi, everybody! I'm the mysterious admin account. After laboring away in thankless obscurity for years, but I finally had the guts to ask for a real avatar. Here I am! I'm a person now! It feels great to be alive! Anyway, I'm here to tell you something important:

Recently, security concerns have come about due to Gaians using the same usernames and passwords on multiple sites.

Everyone knows it's much easier to use the same password for every site you visit. Who wants to remember dozens of different passwords? Unfortunately, using the same password everywhere is very dangerous: if somebody finds out one of your passwords, they know them all!

No matter how good we make Gaia's security, your account can only be as safe as you make it. If you take the following steps, you should have nothing to worry about:

* Use a different password for Gaia than you use for other sites. If another site gets hacked and you use the same password there as on Gaia, your account might be compromised.

* If you've used your Gaia password to register for other sites, change your password right away!

* Use a complicated password with letters, numbers, and capitals. Don't use any variation of your username, or even a real word. Make it long, make it complicated, and make it impossible to guess (and here's the hard part: try not to forget it!).

* Never tell anyone your password, ever! If someone PMs you claiming to be a moderator and asking for your password, they're a scammer. Gaia mods and admins will never ask for your password for any reason.

Thanks, and goodnight!

XOXOXO,
Admin

Luckily, I have three different usernames for Gaia, Subeta and Neo, so I should HOPEFULLY be fine.
