Maybe they didn't expect the child to get stolen-- but who would leave a child alone in a hotel room (or whatever) in the first place? Regardless of how close you are, what if there was an accident!?

There was child-minding in the hotel, they just didn't want to take it because they could check up easily.

Shame that didn't work out, really? The poor girl doesn't deserve to be killed, or whatever dreadful thing that may have happened to her-- but you should be wary of those kind of things if you leave a child alone in a unknown place.

Aye. They were morons of the highest calibre, so engulfed in their own sense of self-satisfaction that they thought they lived in an untouchable bubble of rainbows and sunshine, and that was burst - it doesn't mean they actually deserve it though.

My heart goes out to little Madeleine. Every day I wake up, I'm thinking about her and check the internet to see whether she has been found or not. I almost cry when she hasn't. What that poor girl must be going through. Today was her fourth birthday and at the end of the news last night, they showed us photos from when she was a baby upwards. The girl is loved, that much I do know. Everyone I know has been affected by this and I will never get Madeleine from out of my thoughts until she is found safe and well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her and that she comes back to her parents.

Her parents made a terrible mistake and, IF the worst happens, they will have this on their minds for the REST of their lives. The media have started pointing the blame to them and people I know have been slating them. They have a right to, yes, but in my opinion, the parents have gone through enough without all of this criticism. I'm sure they realise what they've done and they aren't cruel people. They made a very foolish mistake and now they and their beautiful daughter are suffering for it. It's such a tragedy. I really hope they catch whoever has done this and lock them up for a VERY long time.

Relax. No need to get worked up about my mere opinions. They do not impact your life dreadfully so. I have full right-- or at least I should -- to have any opinion about this tragedy as does everybody else.

We don't know what kind of parents they were-- if they had beaten their child daily, and left cigarette burns on her, would you really still be thinking they didn't deserve her being taken from her? Forcefully or not, by an agency, or by a pedophile (Which is what I'm assuming had happened). People need to open their eyes to what the real world *is* like. Many people get killed, raped, kidnapped; it's all just censored to those with comfortable lives, and believes that nothing bad ever happens in the world.

Furthermore-- It is I on my high horse, am I? I don't mean to be ageist, or anything... But what right do you have to
throw accusations such as that around? You're only 14. If anybody, it would be you on your high horse, by bossing your elders around, and telling them not to have their own opinions. Immoral, Moral, or whatnot.

For all we know, actually, her mother could have staged the whole thing, and actually just killed her daughter. It has happened before.

I'm afraid negative criticism comes with the media. It was a wise move getting the media involved, so more people can keep an eye open-- but you should only do that if you're willing to accept the fact that the media will not only twist everything you say, but point out minor facts you might not want the public to know about.... eg; "We left her there in the room alone, whilst we went and had dinner in the restaraunt", etc.

I disagree with BBC saying the following, though:

Despite the obvious usage of the world "believe", they shouldn't make claims that she is still alive. I'd prefer to prepare for the worst, and then be pleasently suprised if it isn't... Otherwise you'd probably have some kind of breakdown if you're told she's alive and well, and was actually found dead somewhere 100 miles away. (That's putting it bluntly, of course)

Hold on... This can't have reached American newstations as well? She was a British girl, with a British family.

We never hear anything about the US on British TV, other than Iraq.

I heard about it the day it happened and i'm Canadian. Welcome to the age of the media, where people are able to get information when it happens, where it happens. This is probably only interesting to foreign news papers simply because of the parents having been so negligent. Speaking as a Canadian, we get a fair bit of British news, and quite a bit of American.

If I turn on Good Morning America on Monday, I'll most likely see it. Remember Natalee Holloway? Remember Laci Peterson? They were American, but Madeline was in a foreign country(like Holloway), and she's cute, and her parents are doctors. This will be all over the soft news for ages.

The media lives for something like this. And so sad that so many other cases aren't given the same attention.

It's a horrible shame, this whole story. I feel I have to stick up for the parents here.

They were on holiday, the family, and as parents do, they need a bit of time away from their children in order to have a relationship of their own. I think its fair that they didn't want a complete stranger looking after their children, so they didn't take that option. Instead, they stayed close to home so that they could keep an eye on the children. Did the parents run off to some nightclub a few minutes away? Did they come home drunk every time they left their children alone? No. Not at all. They simply went to a restaurant seconds away from where they were staying, and had a clear view of the hotel. They checked on their children every 30 minutes, and weren't out for very long at all, just to eat something and go.

No one expects their child, who they believe is in the safety of a home or a hotel room, to be abducted or taken away. That family were a target, and Madeleine was taken purely by someone who had planned it. And I can honestly see why, shes a beautiful little girl. But I don't believe the parents made a mistake in what they did. Parents leave their children at home alone every day, simply because they believe that their children are sensible and safe and wont open the doors to any strangers.

However, this case just shows that even home isn't safe for children anymore. Gods know why she was taken from her hotel room, and her other siblings were left alone. I just hope shes found safely.
