I'm pretty sure they do such a thing for PHPBB, but I feel that a 'Report Post' button would be a nifty idea. Most forums use them nowadays, and it'd be much more efficent than PMing a moderator or admin.

I'm sure you all know how the report post system works, right? You've all seen them on other forums, and the likes. It makes it much easier to report inappropriate comments and whatnot.

What are your views?
Would you ever consider it?

The moderators do a mighty fine job as it is. I see no reason to add such a modification.

Indeed they do, that was not what I was implying.

It's like, instead of PMing a moderator saying 'Someone is spamming the general chat with inappropriate ads", you could just click on Report Post, and the Mods will get an automated report of what the post in question contained, as well as a brief explanation from the reportee.

The thing is, this isn't about how well the mods do their jobs. It's about how the mods are contacted by ordinary members concerning posts they believe break the rules. Instead of sending a PM to a Mod, you would click on the 'Report Post' button and provide a reason why the post breaks the rules. Then an alert would be sent to the moderating staff of that particular board (whether they be ordinary mods, GMs or Admins) and they would respond to the complaint.

I think the system is a good one because it would mean that instead of sending a PM to just one mod and running the risk of them not being on for a while or sending 12 pms to all the people who could respond, you would merely click on a button, write your reason for reporting the post and it would be dealt with by the first person who comes online and has the ability to deal with it.

I vote 'yay' on the proposal!

I'm sure it's moddable so it is sent to the first moderator that comes online, or whatnot.

For example...

I report a post, but there are no moderators online, so it stores itself until the next moderator comes online, at which point, it sends the PM to them. Thereby, giving the quickest response to the report.
Or if there are multiple moderators online, send it to either.

I should have made this a poll, to be honest.

In all honesty, I think things are fine the way they are. I can see the "report post" option being abused quite easily. Just look at the Neoboards on Neopets. I would hate to see our wonderful forum turn into that fiasco. Besides, many of us mods have our AIM and MSN information listed so that if something does come up, people can use that as a way to get a hold of us also.

The difference between PinkPT and Neopets are:

A) The Neoboards are full of six year olds asking for boyfriends/girlfriends.
B) More users on Neopets.
C) Not quite as well moderated.

I doubt the moderators would appreciate being added on MSN everytime something goes wrong.

I know that there are many differences between our site and Neopets. And I personally don't mind being contacted through a messenger program...in fact, people IM me quite frequently to look at certain threads. That's why my contact information is up. I'm sure there are other mods who feel the same.

The moderators perform their tasks well. Do you agree? Of course you do, then there is absolutely no need to change anything. Of all the moderators I know, nearly all of them are happy with what they have to do.

I know that often I see stuff, especially the bot posts early in the morning. Usually the mods are usually not online during that time and things like that sit for quite a while.

What would happen if someone set up a bot to keep making new boards and nobody was there to do anything since they didn't know?

I do agree with you that the mods do their jobs well. But as I have said, this is not about how well the mods do their jobs; it's about how rule violations are reported to them.

Mogster, in any case it would still be sitting there are since no mods would be online nothing could be done. But what the 'Report Post' button WOULD do would be to alert the first moderator that comes on line.

And about abuse of the system. I go to a forum with over 20,000 members and they use a similar system. However, when a post is reported it is not automatically taken down. That would only happen if a Mod decided the post needed to be taken down in the first place. Also, as has been mentioned, the moderators on the Neoboards aren't exactly the best in the world.

Eh. I think such a function would be unnecessary and prone to abuse. (Imagine if one person doesn't like a mod--they wait until that mod comes online, then report several hundred posts or something.) The system right now works well, so why risk upsetting the balance?
Also consider that this is a small enough forum that one person could keep up with every single post on here if that person so chooses. A "Report Post" function just doesn't make sense with the sort of traffic PPT has.

I think that a "report post" function is a good idea. I think it would be more convenient for everybody. And as for the possible abuse of the system, I'm not sure if this is possible, but can't you set it so that one post can only be reported once? This would also be more convenient as sometimes multiple PMs are sent out by different users reporting the same post.

But if the mods are fine with the way things are now, then that's okay, I guess

Well for starters, if we weren't awake at the time, a report post function wouldn't help things anyway as we'd all miss the report :P Secondly, the bot problem should be fixed for now.

And I can't see too many problems with abuse of it (They might have the "Report Post" button, but we have the "Destroy this person, and their family, and their friends, neighbours and anybody who has ever come into contact with them or their pets" buttons), but its not really needed at this stage. Y'all will just have to wait till phpBB 3.0 (And its coming soon *drools*)

Oh man, it's coming soon? Sweet. I shut down my website until said forums were released, they really did seem sweet.

I'm going to go check out the features.

EDIT: Ah, but of course. PHPBB3 will feature a warning system regardless, nevermind that then. I thought it'd be condemned to have to be a forum modification, instead of a real feature.

Huzzah, Hoorah, and the likes.
