It'd be absolutely ridiculous if the teacher got in trouble. He sent permission slips, he made sure everyone knew what was going to happen in that class, he said they had the option of not looking...if this guy gets in trouble, I will grow up with little belief in the American legal system.

No, I never officially left; yes, I am gone forever. I have also permanently left AIM. If you need to contact me, drop a line on LJ. Same username.

Well the permission slips would've covered that anyway, so I doubt he'll get into trouble.

Ah, perhaps you can see why, even though I went to a really great law school, I never bothered to get my law license. Hard to be a servant of the court when you don't agree with the system that they have set forth.

Tested made this fabulous set for me!!! Isn't it great?

My junior year of high school, a student teacher talked about some of the more specific horrors of concentration camps. I was seventeen at the time, but I was still reduced to tears and had to actually leave school because I was so disturbed by ideas alone.
However, I never even considered the student teacher responsible. When I explained to my mother why I went home, she understood why I had to leave, and never tried to blame him. I'm sensitive, but I don't feel like that teacher should have been reprimanded for teaching us something beyond "The Holocaust was a horrible thing, and there were many atrocities committed against many people, but we won't mention any specific ones because you're too fragile."
Maybe this girl is sensitive, too, but what did she expect when he started talking about Charles Manson? If she was so disturbed by the images, she should have known better than to look. She was warned.
There's a picture of a monk who set himself on fire in my old history textbook, which is still in circulation. Should we sue the textbook company for it?
Hey, why not sue every public school that uses pictures to illustrate historical events?
Then let's sue movie companies for making horror films.
Then let's sue news channels for reporting violent crimes.
Because life is supposed to be all sunshine and lollipops, right?

Nice.

Anyway, that is just ridiculous. If he sent slips home and warned them, it shouldn't be a problem. This situation reminds me of the song "I'll Sue Ya". (Lyrics are here)

That's a great line, Moongewl. Mind if I borrow it sometime?

Go ahead. I borrowed from "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows" to create it myself.

My thoughts exactly. If he sent out permission slips and the parents signed them and the girl did not take her chance to the leave the room or close her eyes then that's their problem.
In regards to what someone said in an earlier post, a lot of teachers use images to show the severity of things. Sometimes it helps to better understand the impact of something. It works especially well with things involving mass murders when the numbers are so big that it's hard for people to fathom how it would even be possible.

Yeah, our history class watched a video with actual footage from the Holocaust and concentration camps yesterday. There was a lot of graphic stuff (which I won't describe) but no one had any issues. Everyone could leave if they wanted. And I must say, it made a lot larger impact on me than just reading about it.

The Holocaust is different from a picture of the Marilyn Manson murders.

In what way would you say they were different?
