On my new PC, the fan/heatsink makes grinding noises on bootup. I've ordered a replacement fan, but i need to make sure that simply replaceing it will fix the issue, cause the motherboard alarm goes off. I'm on my older PC right now cause im afraid to use that one. (i spent $2,000 on that PC an cannot afford to damage it).

I'm not sure what you're asking.

The grinding noise will likely be the fan getting stuck-- If I were you, I'd open it up and give the fan a play with, and make sure it hasn't got any gunk inside of it which slows up the initiation.

Well, the only one to know for sure is to start your computer using the new replacement fan. I don't think there is any way to check without actually starting it up.

That, and taking the old fan and seeing what is wrong with it, specifically.

Eee that doesn't sound too good. Bring it into a com technician and get their professional opinion.

If it's a new PC surely you'll have some kind of 1 year Warranty to help you out? If you do then for the love of god don't go messing around in its insides, you'll void it.

If you hear grinding noises on bootup, it could be a hard drive failure or the fan dying.

If your computer is still under warranty, then call the company for advice. And if it isn't still under warranty, then it might be an easy fix. I have a forced air furnace and we tend to get a lot of dust. Which can get inside the computer. Do you have a can of compressed air around the house? If so, you might want to take off the back cover and blast the fan with the compressed air. It is possible that the only thing wrong with the fan is that there is a chunk of dust on it.

I often blast various components like drives and stuff with air and it cleans it out well. That may be the problem. But if you are worried and don't have warranty, get some pro advice, you don't want to have to get a new computer.

New, huh? It should still be under warranty, so ask someone from the company that sold it to you to take a look at it before you buy any spare parts. Since the motherboard alarm goes off, and it's just booting up, something tells me the fan may not be what you're hearing. (My logic is that the computer would be cool when booting up and wouldn't need the fan right away. If this happened sometime while the computer has been operational for awhile, I'd say otherwise. Keep in mind, however, that I could be very, very wrong.)

The fan could make grinding noises immediately on startup if it is seriously off-balance, so it's hitting something with every turn. The fan starts when you bootup, so it's possible. That happened to my dad's desktop...it sounded horrible! I'd still go to a pro to make sure it's not something more serious, though.

I'm with Siouxper. My processor fan was making grinding noises on bootup (it would calm down after a while), and my dad blew it with some canned air. Try that first before anything. If that's not it, replace the fan, and if that's not it, the hard drive is probably going out.

Yeah, it's all the right idea. Check the fan for dust, spray it with canned air (that sounds weird...) and if that dosen't work, take it into the company if it's still under warranty. or, you could play around a bit, rip out the techno-spaghetti (e.g, wires ) and electrocute yourself a little.
