Hi, my name is bell02 and I'm currently working on a Flash and PHP web-based Pet raising game. Right now I'm researching on the fan's opinions on Neopets and pet sites like it.

So this is what I want to know, besides the basic poll:

1) What do you like about Neopets, what do you not like?
2) What would you want to add to Neopets or a site similar to it?
3) How long have you used Neopets, and do you see yourself wanting to try out other sites also.


Also, if you really have some opinions to give on Neopet's competitors such as: (saying if you like them or don't like them, and what you don't like/ like about them)

1) What do you like about Neopets, what do you not like?
I like how complex it is, in terms of the games, plots, items, pets, etc. There are so many different things to do, so many different ways to interact with the site. It has been very innovative.
2) What would you want to add to Neopets or a site similar to it?
I don't really know. I don't want to say "nothing" because Neopets is not perfect, but I just can't think of anything right now. Er, perhaps fixing up the boards. They are in ruins at the moment.
3) How long have you used Neopets, and do you see yourself wanting to try out other sites also.
I've used Neopets for six years, on and off. I use Gaia, but that's it. I don't want to get involved with any other sites because I have a lot going on right now.

1) What do you like about Neopets, what do you not like?
I like the new layout,It's alot more orginized.I don't like the customer service,they don't even try.
2) What would you want to add to Neopets or a site similar to it? Just more mods.
3) How long have you used Neopets, and do you see yourself wanting to try out other sites also. Over two years,I might try out Webkinz someday.I've played Marapets for a year on and off.

What do you like about Neopets, what do you not like?
I like that there are so many different things to do - games to play, avatars to collect, plots to participate in. The only thing I don't like is the Neoboards, I lose brain cells lurking there sometimes.

What would you want to add to Neopets or a site similar to it?
I honestly have no clue what I'd add to Neo.

How long have you used Neopets, and do you see yourself wanting to try out other sites also.
I've been playing Neopets for more than 4 years. I've out checked similar sites, but none of them held my interest.

1) What do you like about Neopets, what do you not like?
I like the fact that there's plenty of games to do and you're free to roam pretty much anywhere you want as often as you want. I hate the fact that they're not as interactive with their members as they use to be. I hate the fact they havent made shields since year 6, and here we are in year 8. I hate the fact the support team flat out stinks when it comes to actually helping you when you're frozen. I hate the fact it's being taken over by tons of little kids, many who are way to young to be on the boards and they report you for saying certain "cuss" words that are not blocked by the filters. I could go on and on, but i'm good.

2) What would you want to add to Neopets or a site similar to it?
A neoboard for veterans only, that way we can escape the little kids or new members in general. More colors, I'm tired of the same old stuff. More things to do daily wise.

3) How long have you used Neopets, and do you see yourself wanting to try out other sites also.
Since I was 11, which was 6 years ago. I'll have been signed up for Neopets 6 years in July. I'm not interested in other sites, but i'm not too interested in Neopets much anymore anyway. I basically only stick around when it comes to plots.

1) What do you like about Neopets, what do you not like?

I like the games, the originality, the plots, and the fact that it never seems like a chore to play it. When I say that, I mean you don't have to go on it EVERY SINGLE DAY and be bored. For example, I used to play Millsberry for a few weeks, but I realized how many things you had to do each day. I also played Club Penguin. Lastly, I played Marapets. But that doesn't mean that.

2) What would you want to add to Neopets or a site similar to it?

I guess I just want a few things. For one, I want certain people to be banned from the boards. They're so unoriginal it makes me want to puke. Also the illiterates. They're what, 17 and they can't make a decent sentence? And not so many gifted/vampire/school/anime boards. Or anything else I missed.

I also want the pages to be less laggy. They are for me anyway. I mean, in the old layout it was fine. But now it's taking 5-8 minutes for one page to load for me. I have dial-up, so it may be that. But still....

3) How long have you used Neopets, and do you see yourself wanting to try out other sites also.
I have been playing Neopets for about two years.

I used to play Millsberry for a few weeks, but i realized how many things you had to do to get their health bars, hunger bars, smarts bars, ect. You had to go on it every day without anything like the Neolodge or nothing. I mean, how are you going to get stupider by not reading 50 books a day?! It was literally like that.

I would still be playing Club Penguin to this day were it not for these reasons: The flash thing in it would always say to Load My Cache or something like that and when I did, Club Penguin would freeze on me! It was also annoying to have all the people say stupid things.

Ahhh. Marapets. Those were BORING DAYS! Sorry for all the caps. Anyways, I only played it for a day when I was bored. It was horrible! The worlds and pets were ugly, including painted pets. It was also badly organized. Just...ugh.

The feed back so far has been great due to all of your comments. It is great to hear from the Neopets community. So far I understand that people want customization, more administrative work, and want 56k users to still be recognized.

Another thing I recognize is that people do not want to be forced to high standards of daily playing (or facing consequences) to have to achieve anything.

I'll continue to read everyone's comments, so thank you very much for the input so far!

1) What do you like about Neopets?

I really like the unique-ness of Neopets. I've looked around a lot of other virtual pet sites, and nothing has quite the high caliber of art work and site quality that Neopets has. I like the challenges such as making money off of the stock market and food club. My favorite part is probably the plots and being able to work with other people to solve it.

What do you not like?

I do not like the cute-ification of everything on the site. I'm one of those old members who remembers that Neopets was originally created for college students and young adults. It is no longer aimed at those people, so it is slowly losing them with the overly cute, kiddy stuff. Also, as stated already, the customer service is TERRIBLE. I don't think I have ever dealt with a business that has customer service as bad as Neopets. Enquiring about a bug when you have Premium service should not take a month to reply to

2) What would you want to add to Neopets or a site similar to it?

What I would like is more interaction with the people who run the site. I would love to be able to submit ideas or bug reports and know that people actually read them. Also, recognition for the older users would be great. A "loyalty" program would be great...like a prize for every year that you have been an active member of the site.

3) How long have you used Neopets?

I've been on Neopets since March of 2001, so that makes 6 years now.

Do you see yourself wanting to try out other sites also?

I've looked around at lots of other sites, but nothing has really grabbed my attention. Also, the fact that I would have to start over is a little discouraging with the lack of time I have due to real life commitments.

I like everything about Neopets except TNT.

I like the variety of items. There are tons of categories for collectors, tons of cheap items, expensive things, stuff in between, pretty things, unique things, ugly things, etc. Item variety and the general good quality in item art makes me happy. I like the Kadoatery too, and Random Contest. Like a lot of people, I dont like the lack of interaction between TNT and users, or their newer ideas that make it seem like Neopets is more about quantity than quality. (Tons of barely adequate plots with little time to take a break (plots used to be special occassions! Now they're expected right after each other), Neovision, fun images, etc.)

2) What would you want to add to Neopets or a site similar to it?
I want the new features to be fun to read again. I want an original plot with puzzles that are hard for everyone, not just 5th graders. And I want a support team that supports.

3) How long have you used Neopets, and do you see yourself wanting to try out other sites also.
Ive played Neopets since April 2001. I play Gaia sometimes, but since Im not a chatter, and that site has so few games, I get bored too quick. Its like that for most other pet sites Ive tried. Gaia is pretty decent, and I like their item system. (I find gold hard to get, but if you save for a store item, you're guaranteed to get it...no restocking needed.) The Gaia theater is interesting. Better than Neovision.

1) What do you like about Neopets, what do you not like?

Okay, I like the fact that normally you can participate in most things in the events that are happening, but what i dont like is how now they have introduced this whole customisation thing, which wont load on old computers with rubbish graphics cards like mine, so I'm kinda stuck with a red buzz with a grass skirt...
Also I think the neopets layout looks... kinda less like a pet site than a bank or something.... you know what I mean....

2) What would you want to add to Neopets or a site similar to it?

I would add... Expressions to the pets so they dont look completely passive And also maybe something (like a certain part of the site) that users that have stuck around the site for a while could access, like say a Lutari Island only you dont have to have the mobile, you just have to have been on neo for a coupla years...

3) How long have you used Neopets, and do you see yourself wanting to try out other sites also.

I have used neopets for about 2 1/2 years, and I often try other pet sites but so far none have really met the standard...

* Club Penguin - You have to pay for too much. I used to play, but there's only so much that you can do on it without paying.
* Adventure Quest - This just totally confused me when I played it
* Gaia - Its okay, only th Gaia towns never loaded on an old computer like mine, so I got fed up...
* Marapets - I found this like a lower down version of neopets, sort of hard, because in the news page there was never any links to anywhere or anything, and the Glow on the fonts in the boards made my eyes weird...

I've played for 3 years I think and I've tried Marapets.

im a neopets devout user. Ive been using it since as long as I can remember. I do take breaks every once in a while like i did a year ago until one of my friends who also plays got me addicted again.

I like the pets & the fansites, and some plots & games.

I've been on Neopets for about 2 and a half years now, and I've used some of the other sites, and none can compare

I've used Marapets, it's ok-ish, and Club Penguin... *shudder* all my friends go on there, but I really don't like it. It's so, weird, and I find it babyish, and no body understand the slightest abbreviations, like 'u' or 'b' or un-capitalized letters like 'i'. It's annoying But that's just my opinion.

I love that you can do basicly anything. I love the community and all the plots and such. I am pretty neutral when it comes to the new layout but I really dislike most of the petredraws.

2) What would you want to add to Neopets or a site similar to it?
I would like to add to Neopets the old zing it used to have. Just that personality that would show up in the new features. Havn't had any new avatars in a while either.

I have been playing Neopets for just about 4 1/2 years now. I have tried Marapets but Neopets is way better.
