My sister and I both wear contacts. We missed out on the product recall of the contact solution we use and we found out the hard way.

My eyes turned out to be fine, but my sister was badly affected. She got the Acanthamoeba keratitis infection and then got a staph infection in her eyes. She woke up one morning and the whites of her eyes were blood red and she had severe ocular pain. My mom took her to the optometrist immediately. With her glasses on, the vision in her left eye was so blurred she couldn't even make out many of the larger lines on the letter chart. We found out that if we had brought her in even a day later, she probably would have gone blind and the left eye would have been surgically removed.

She's just now cleared the woods due to the plethora of eye drops she has to receive every couple hours. That's why I haven't been online in a bit. The whole family's been in a panic and they had to cart me off to the eye doctor as well to make sure I didn't get it.

Has a product recall ever messed with your life? (Example: Your dog ate a bunch of that poisoned dogfood and is now pushing up daisies.) Elaborate.

Kinda sorta. My family has a TV stand that was recalled because it could easily tip over if too much pressure was placed on the front of it. My brother found this out the hard way when the TV fell on him while he was messing with cords and stuff. He wasn't hurt, but startled. The company's idea of fixing it involved nailing/gluing a piece of wood to the front, but since it would've meant that our TV could fit the stand and it didn't really hurt any of us anyway, we didn't bother.

When I got my laptop last year, I was almost hit by the 'Dell's spontaneously combusting battery' recall, but I received my computer a week after the recall period ended.

o_o Holy cow, Fidds. That's insane. I'm glad your sister is okay and that you guys caught it before it could have been disastrous.

I've never been affected by a product recall, though apparently they stopped selling the model that my old laptop was, because it had so many people bringing them in for repair...

Gone, forever.

No, I haven't been affected. I almost was affected by the Dell laptop battery thing, as I got my computer in the time period stated in the recall, but the battery serial number wasn't one of those affected.

Yes. In early 2005, A red food dye known as Sudan I (banned by the Food Standard Agency) was in over 400 food products, and apparently it could increase the risk of certain cancers. I think most people in Britain will remember this.

That sucks, Fidds. :( Glad to hear everything came out fine.

Hedo, I'm so sorry to hear that. <3

The whole family caught salmonella from the peanut butter thing. XP And then we had some of the dog food, but our dog's fine.

We had some of the dogfood that was recalled, ironically enough our dog didn't like the food and wouldn't eat it. Lucky for us she's picky I guess?

But that's horrible about your sister getting that infection. I'm so glad you guys caught it in time! Hopefully she'll be good as new soon. They really should have done a better job about informing people huh? :(

Fidds! What was the name of that contact solution? Mine got recalled not so long ago. Thankfully, my friend Ceri and I did not get the eye disease with a long name :) Wow, it's bad to hear about your sister though. :/

That's terrible. I'd still be horribly upset if she went blind even though my sister's a bit of a jerk, but if I'd lost my dog over something like that I'd burn down the factory and hunt down the managers with a crossbow.

Your grandparents have my sincerest sympathies. There just isn't any sort of compensation they can give you that makes up for taking your dog.

My condolences go out to everyone affected by a food recall, it's never funny when someone you love is put into harm's way.

As for my family, my nephew (Who's two now) has an obsession with "Thomas & Friends" and the whole family buys him DVD's and the like of Thomas. Apparently, my brother stumbled onto the news that the DVD's were being recalled along with some toys made from wood. There was apparently a poisonous chemical able to leak from both items.

Luckily we returned the toys and all is well.

We (my apartmentmates and I) bought the bad peanut butter, but realized it before we ate it and tossed it. My dad, on the other hand, didn't know until my brother and I told him. At that point, he had eaten almost the whole jar. Thankfully, he didn't get sick.

Wow, Fidds, I'm glad your sis is OK. You guys used moistureplus brand contact lens solution? I used it too - my optometrist handed me a sample a few months ago when I got a new style of contacts. Then I went to buy refills at Walgreens and the register popped up an alert in all caps that read "PRODUCT RECALLED DO NOT SELL CALL MANAGER MAKE WHIMPERING APOLOGY NEGOTIATE TOOTHLESS UNITED NATIONS RESOLUTION ISSUE REFUND COMMIT HARA-KIRI."

However, neither the manager, the cashier, or I knew what was up. I just bought something else and went about my life until I got a frantic call from my optometrist.

Good bedside manner, at least.

Anyway, I've not been affected by any product recalls that I can think of (Thomas the Tank Engine and his Lead Paint Express aren't in my age range anymore).

I don't know if anyone remembers the Firestone Tire recall, but my cousin had one of those tires. He was on the highway at the time, but fortunately over in the right lane getting ready to exit when the entire tire just unraveled like a thread from a sweater with no good reason. He fortunately was able to swerve to the shoulder and off to the grass so neither he nor anyone else got hurt. I don't remember all the details from there, but he got his car repaired and tires replaced on them.

Hope your sister is doing better Fidd!
