SCAM ALERT

#1 Post by Katherine »

I just got this e-mail:

Dear Katherine,

As you know Neopets has over one hundred million users. Lately we are becoming over-populated and are doing a databse cleanout. We are asking that everyone reply and make corrections if needed.

Name: Katherine
Pin Number: 1947
Username: ______harrypotter353
Password: harry1
Number of pets: 2

If you don't reply within a 30 days, we will assume you don't use your account and/or do not wish to stay with us here at neopets. Database cleanout is scheduled exactly 30 days from August 02, 2007, which is September 1, 2007. All accounts without a proper cleanout will be transferred to the deletion table.
Sincerely, The Neopets Team

That's an awesome password. Almost as good as my luggage combination:

That's the problem with scams - they can be completely stupid but if they're written with enough formalized language they seem almost credible. Like this:

Our request is anchored on our desire and need to establish a profiting business relationship with trusted players. We therefore solicit your partnership to enable us transfer into your designated account the said funds.

The funds in question, presently floating in The Neopets Team Bank (TNTB) is as a result of the gross overuse of The Neopets Team Neopoints Generator (TNTNG) by the previous administration. They are presently under verification. To this effect, the present administration in Neopets set up our adhoc committee to identify, scrutinize and recommend the best use of said Neopets funds in order to benefit the game. In the course of our assignment, we have identified a lot of misappropriated and inflated sums, which are presently floating in the suspense account of The Nopets Team (TNT), ready for payment. It is part of the over-inflated sum, totalling 28,250,000.00 NP (twenty eight million, two hundred and fifty thousand Neopoints) that we intend to transfer into a user account for the purchase and redistribution of paintbrushes.

The members of the committee have therefore mandated me, as a matter of trust, to seek a trusted player into whose account we would transfer the sum of 28,250,000.00 (twenty eight million, two hundred and fifty Neopoints). This is the main purpose of this correspondence.

On completion of the transfer, we the committee members have agreed to share the fund thus:

(1) 10% to be redistributed to the general playbase through random events;
(2) 25% for the account owner (you) and
(3) 65% for the purchase and redistribution of paintbrushes

It is from the 65% that we intend for our trusted player to purchase and redistribute paintbrushes. Please note that this transaction is completely safe and guaranteed since Donna has empowered us to disburse all the funds found to be floating in the The Neopets Team Bank (TNTB) as well as redundant accounts from 1995 till date. Also, the present democratic dispensation creates even a more favourable atmosphere.

Edit: Trimmed because it ended up being huge. But you get the idea. When will people stop trusting random emails?
