He tried on the glove in court, even though it had, according to Wikipedia, been "soaked in blood, mangled during scientific investigation of it and frozen and unfrozen several times." Of course it didn't fit, because it had shrunk, but his attorney kept telling the jury "if the glove don't fit, you must acquit."
Also according to Wikipedia: "Prosecutors claimed to have heard a few of them [the jury] saying things like "Well, lots of people have the same blood type," not understanding that DNA is very different from blood type. Another reason seems to stem from the fact that the jury included mostly African-Americans, suggesting that race also played a part in the decision."
