Hey, it kind of looks cool, it is just a little icky..

But if this will save some frogs from being dissected, I think it is a good cause.

It probably just means they can continue experimenting on them until they die, rather than ending their short lives. But it may save other frogs from suffering the same fate.

That's interesting and bizarre. I don't think this'll save frogs from being dissected because while you can look at their organs through their skin, it's not 100% transparent, and eventually you'll have to look at the organs that are covered up, so high school dissection of frogs will still go on.

Wonder what the life expectancy is?
As I recall see through things tend to get gacked by UV radiation -Except the sea life for obvious reasons-

There should be no pain in dissection - the critters should already be dead. Asking a teenager to kill an animal is wrong on so many levels - a) they won't get it right, causing the animal pain and suffering because it isn't dead yet or it dies a needlessly slow and painful death, or b) they won't be able to do it without severe mental anguish. Even 17-year-olds are still just kids who often don't have the mental capacity to deal with death of a cute little critter. Heck, I know 40-year-olds who couldn't do it.

Order pre-dead frogs, please.

there are actually alot of see-through creatures in the world. They live mostly in caves where there is no light. They include fish, insects and salamanders. They dont need pigment because they bodies arent exposed to light.

we have these little guys in missouri caves. they're pretty cool to watch but very tiny. We also have the see-through cave frogs. I've caught one before (poor thing lol).

here's out blind, see through fish from the ozarks
http://www.nps.gov/ozar/forteachers/ima ... e-fish.jpg
they're hard to catch though. since they have no eyes they rely on sensors to detect movement...and they're fast.

as you can see, you can look directly at their internal organs.

but any of these creatures can have alot of issues if exposed to light for too long, since light is radiation (in a small dose, but when you're not exposed to it or protected from it then its bad news).

so theres my bio lesson for the day lol. I took a missouri biology class in college and we covered these animals and went into the field to observe them. they're pretty cool and you can watch all their internal organs function without having to dissect them.

I wouldn't want to see what was inside myself most of the time...lol.
But if I could, maybe I wouldn't eat so much. I'd be like the man in Memoirs of an Invisible man, and drink broth most of the time.

For the same reason you'd invent transparent frogs.

That doesn't look transparent to me, but what do I know. :P

I think high schools should just use virtual lab programs, especially for animal dissection. I've used virtual labs in school, and they're a whole lot less frustrating, and more accurate, because there's less room for human error. But the point here is, it would be a very good thing especially in the case of dissection.

Is it true that some high schools actually make the kids dissect the frogs (or whatever) while they're alive?! That's just wrong. That's so wrong that I'm pretty sure I can even say that without controversy.

The only thing I've ever dissected is an owl pellet. That's not the same...it's just a ball of fur and tiny bones that an owl couldn't digest. It's not nearly as gross as it sounds, even.

I thought the thread was "See-through fog" and I was thinking, "Hold on, fog is see through, I guess but it's also really dense. Interesting," but I was disappointed when I came to find it was about a frog. Boo!

It's called pithing. The connection between the brain and the rest of the body is lost by inserting a needle in the brain and wiggling it. It sounds inhumane, but there are no pain receptors in the brain and once the brain stops being able to send commands to the rest of the body, it's also unable to feel anything. The end result is the same: a dead frog that's been cut up so a bunch of high school kids(who rarely express a desire to see the inside of a frog) can look inside it and think "ew."
