Massive Hacking...?

#1 Post by smudgeoffudge »

The neoboards are going crazy about something going on. It seems many of the top neopets players either self froze or were hacked.
Some people think this is a joke but I don't see why anyone would go through the trouble of self freezing for a joke. I don't really know what else is going on at the moment.

I just wanted to point out also that these are the elite of neopets. It has never been policy to give back items to hacked accounts. Most of the little nobodies who get "hacked" don't even get their account back, or are very lucky to get any response, which can take anywhere from days to weeks to never.

But if an exception is made for THESE players and they get their accounts swiftly returned to them with all items intact, I feel that this will show favoritism.

I feel if it is NOT the policy to return hacked items, then it is NOT the policy for you..and not the policy for me..and not the policy for even the top elite.

But we'll see what the real policy is going to be. I am pretty sure we do see some favoritism shown to these accounts, simply they being above the rest of us.

Perhaps they will admit that neopets can be hacked, which they have never really admitted to before. Maybe they will say since these people were in fact hacked, not cracked or the victim of a scam, they can return the items.

But if they do so for one, they should do so for all..for now and until the site ceases to exist.

I doubt they're going to say anything about it at all, just like every hacking that has ever happened. It is unusual that all these accounts were successfully hijacked, though. I hope the hole is fixed quick, but I'd recommend for everyone to not make your presence known (take down rare trades, avoid the boards etc) for a little while just in case.

On the other hand, perhaps TNT has a new method of detecting cheating. Not saying that these players necessarily do, but if you're good at it and good at hiding it, you'll end up at the top eventually from a logic point of view.

Also according to the boards, 3 MSPP card owners are frozen. That'll be great for inflation.

Whatever method he used to do this, they can track it and find out how it was done. Sometimes a little hacking can be good for beefing up security, but it is still sad that it is at the expense of others.

I just don't see the point in hacking. I always imagine hackers as unpopular, ungainly, nerdy, anti social, fat or incredibly skinny/tall, just...geeks.. lurking in their parents basement and with no life at all, except for their virtual one. I imagine them as people who are intelligent in some ways, but aren't mature enough to distinguish between fantasy and real life. Between virtual power..and real power.

I think real power exists when you yourself change the world..not the virtual you doing something in the virtual world. That is just pretend power..and short lived.

There are a couple of XSS holes in Neopets at the moment (in stuff like the neocash site, which was apparently written by some other company). Many of these accounts, however, have had their cookies stolen before and should already know how to avoid such things. Strange.

erm... there were comments on the neoboards about how the hacker did this because some members of TNT are into scientology? Doing bad things to the players in an attempt TNT memebers? That's just....weird....

Whoa, that's.... odd. Thanks for the heads up. Makes me wish I could hide my pets, lest someone look at them and think I'm actually rich or something. (I spent all my NP on them, that's why I'm broke now! )

Well, some of the top players got to be that way from playing lots of games, massive restocking, and just total dedication to the site. Lots of work. Anyone could be the same if they wanted to put the time into it. I don't like that someone would rant against someone when they themselves do not put any work into their own account. If you are jealous of the top accounts, but do nothing for your own, I think that is just a waste of time and breath.

The only thing I don't like is that it does seem that favoritism is shown to some people, when others ask for the same treatment and don't get it. If timely responses and action are taken for the top and elite users, then this should be done for the newbiest account as well.

Apologies in advance if there is already a thread for this (and if there is, where is it?) ::

Does this have anything to do with the new way games are being displayed? Because I am having a fit right now that I can't full screen my Turmac Roll window anymore!

(And by the way, am I totally missing where the boards about April 2008 trophies are being talked about, too? I checked the Games board and anything I could think related to such.)

Someone on the neoboards just posted this: Do you figure this has anything to do with the hacking? And when we have the all clear, please post. For now, I've emptied my trades, but with the glitches I hesitate to touch my gallery. =/

"The server images50.neopets.com at Neoadmin Useranme ....word requires a username and ....word.

Warning: This server is requesting that your username and ....word be sent in an insecure manner (basic authentication without a secure connection)."

This popped up in the middle of my screen but my lovely system activated its EEK! NO! watchdogs. I have reported this to TNT already but be warned.

Apparently, they all had their cookies/passwords stolen through IM by Xero (the apparent hacker of the accounts) Although I am glad the mods took quick action dealing with these accounts.

Also, referring to the post directly above mine:

If you click Cancel, everything should work fine (at least that's what I did). I think this is just a bug?
