In my city, we don't usually go Downtown for most of our chores. My neighborhood is like a city all in itself--there are supermarkets, lots of restaurants, schools, law enforcement, and employment within a 15-minute drive from practically anyone. The only people who regularly travel downtown are those who have jobs there.

Area-wise, our city is too large to be properly serviced by a light rail network or for people to walk. We have a bus system that some people use, but most people just drive on our vast network of freeways. Sure it causes pollution, but nobody really cares.

San Francisco has a really spun out transportation system. I take the bus/train almost every single day.

None, 'cos we only have a bus here and it only runs downtown. XP

Buses in Vancouver (rarely, if ever, the Skytrain) and Waterloo, but lately it's buses and the subway in Toronto. I remain jealous of Hong Kong's MTR system everytime I go there or read about it.

Taxi's to the pub. I don't really use public transport around here where I live though, as the train only comes once an hour, and takes an hour to get to Penrith (it'd take me about 35-40 minutes to drive).

Last 6 months I would take the train a fair bit, unless I was working the 5am shift - I was 45 minutes away from the city, and the first train was at 4:48.

From July-Jan I'll be taking buses or trains though - I don't really know the public transport system of Brisbane what with not having visited there in 14 years.

public transport in my city isnt the safest or happiest way to travel. metrolink brings crime and buses cant drive worth a poop (I've nearly been sideswiped by one several times).

I just drive myself everywhere. I dont have to adheir to a set schedule and I get can get whatever done, when I need to do it.

ah but you are in Hong Kong (correct?) the land of amazingly efficient public transport, octopus cards and crazy expensive parking spaces. Not every city is as efficiently laid-out, as some just sort of sprawl out from a few towns until *poof* it's a city

I'm actually quite lucky that I live near two MRT/LRT lines (originally called LRT, light rail transit, but one of them is called MRT for some reason) as well as thee central hub for buses and jeepneys (jeeps). Jeeps are the main transport- their routes go anywhere. Just hang on and hope you arrive intact.
