Ironically, I went to bed late last night (~12:20a) and got up at the same time I left for work yesterday. Traffic this morning was h-o-r-r-e-n-d-o-u-s. I suppose it could have been much, much worse because it has been much worse in the past... But today's hour plus drive really stank. So I am tired and late. Ugh. More coffee, please.

Bleh, Blue. No fun. Traffic can be a mess. It's been getting worse here over the last few years. They completely closed down the major highway earlier this week (unbeknownst to me) and the street I was using to get MLP to dance was a mess because several people had diverted to it. I am glad we hardly have to use that highway, because it's always a nightmare. Unfortunately every other "fast" road around here is a tollway, though. Meh. Haven't had to do much in terms of getting on any of the above, though, lately, so that's been nice.

Traffic is definitely worse here than the pre-pandemic times. My theory is that people (still) do not want to use public transit and are clogging up the roads. I rather miss the traffic of 2 years ago... It so very felt like the Zombie apocalypse when the first lockdown happened. Very weird.

I've found that there are a lot more people treating roads like Mario Kart now. (This has been confirmed by scientific studies. It started when some police precincts stopped issuing tickets during lockdown because so many officers were getting sick, plus less traffic, but it's continued ever since, so much so that despite fewer miles being driven, 2020 had the most traffic fatalities, reversing a 14- year trend of declining deaths. There's historic precedent for an increase in risk taking behavior during global crises.)

Traffic is not quite up to pre-pandemic levels here (speaking very locally) because several of the largest employers in the area have made work from home permanently optional.

The Zombie apocalypse days WERE weird!

We've had an influx of people moving here, so naturally, our traffic situation has gotten worse along with that. It used to be we'd only see the really crazy drivers during winter (example: oh, you just turned right from the left hand turn lane across 3 lanes of traffic and have an out of state license plate - hello snowbirds!) but a lot of them are making their homes permanently down here now. I should add: we're far enough away from the major touristy places that the behavioral change has been noticeable every year...until the last almost 2 when it's been year round. Unfortunately, not being near the major touristy areas, we have very little in terms of public transit as it is. Thank goodness Mr. P works from home permanently now! His previous job is back to only allowing work from home 3? days a week, from what I understand from someone else that still works there.

Georgia has gained over 250k people since COVID started (based on the denominators the public health department uses), and nearly all of that growth is in metro Atlanta. While they're constantly replacing older homes with higher density housing in my county, there's just not that much real estate to do that to, so most of that growth (and the traffic that comes with it) is further out. For such a large city, public transportation is laughable. And the people impacting traffic the most keep voting against expanding it.

I think I've already ranted here about housing costs. My rent nearly doubled for this move, and there's a clause in the lease that automatically increases rent by 5% every year (with an option to raise it more with notice) if we choose to stay. I was going to argue against that citing local data, but it turns out housing went up 5.7%/year for the several years before COVID, and over 12% since (largely driven by large companies buying up houses here).

Rent and housing prices are out of control. I have a co-worker that is trying to buy their first house, but prices are crazy and everything goes super fast with cash offers and sells for more than asking.

Eh, who cares if we've ranted about housing costs before. Feel free to rant again. And ouch on the doubled rent. That sounds very familiar right now. I haven't even looked at how many people have come here since COVID started, but I know the numbers are also ridiculous.

Someone in our neighborhood recently bought one of the houses that had been a rental. The price he paid for it was almost TWICE what we paid for ours when we built it. I don't know what model house he was talking about, but....HOLY COW. We checked Zillow to see our estimated value, and it was definitely up there, too. Needless to say, housing costs here are ridiculous right now, all around. Houses have been flying off the market here for cash at ridiculous prices as well, and apartments/rentals are going up in cost, too. I know people who have grown kids renting that are having to move back in with parents because their apartment rent went up so high they can no longer afford it, even with roommates!

I'm SO grateful that we are settled so our housing didn't go up...and that we didn't end up having to move in the middle of all this (although we probably would've actually MADE money off selling our house for a change instead of taking a small loss and just being grateful we sold like our last two moves...it wouldn't have helped if where we ended up was super expensive, too).

We're actually impacted in a different way, though: there's some improvements/repairs we want/need to make/do to our house that Mr. P doesn't have the knowledge/time to do, and he wants to hire someone to do it....but he can't even get quotes from ANYONE. I mean, we're actually willing to pay someone to do it for us for a change, but can't: anyone in the construction business is so busy with new builds right now that it's impossible to get them to do anything else, apparently. One of the projects, Mr. P sucked it up and bought the equipment that will work with stuff we already have so he can DYI it, but the other...not sure how that'll happen. Needless to say, he's going to be holed up doing the one project this weekend. Bleh.

The neighbor 2 doors down with a similar floor plan just listed their house yesterday for 4X of my purchase price! Hope they get it. Regarding repairs, same issue here. Seriously need stucco work and I do not want to do it.
