if my petpet gets changed into a pile of soot by the ray... it will no t change again into another petpet?? have to un attach it from my pet and then attach it again?

You can keep it attached and zap it again. It'll still have a chance to get changed into a different petpet by the lab ray

how can you make something out of nothing? I thought that matter could be neither created nor destroyed and that it goes somewhere, right? or was that energy?

Well, technically you can turn energy into matter and vice versa. So, if you have a pile of soot, you could turn it into a petpet if you add enough energy, and the bonds connect just right.

Just thought I would add that Turmy will eat a pile of soot (and you can get the avy this way.)

So maybe Turmy thinks piles of soot are "something" rather than "nothing."

Actually, it is energy that is neither created nor destroyed, not matter. Matter can be turned into energy, as jeffwulf said. Hence the famous E=mc^2. Matter is constantly being created and destroyed in current string theory, as photons change into anti-matter and matter particle for infitesmal amounts of time, and then they recombine back into energy to be the photon again.
