Password Not Secure

A new feature on the site is now in effect to help keep your password secure. If you log in with a password that they believe isn't secure, they show the Chia policeman saying it isn't secure enough. (There is a screenie here)

I wonder when this started, but at least they care about their users. What do you think?

What makes a password secure, in their estimation? Apparently neither mine nor my sister's is secure. Mine has numbers and letters, while hers has letters, numbers and a special character.

That's been pulling up passwords with only letters for a few months, but it suddenly seems have become cautious to the point of paranoia.

I'd be interested to know their criteria, also.

I noticed that just a few days ago one of my usual number/letter passwords was no longer good enough. I saw the policeman chia and thought my account was frozen at first o_o Its not like my password was 'hello' or something, but if they want to get security-crazy, I'll go with it. Better than no security at all.

hm, may have some of the same criteria that I had when I had to figure out one for the uni log in. the rules were as follows:

At least two numbers
At least two capital letters, but it couldn't be only with those, either. normal ones had the down limit of two, too
and lastly, it couldn't be an actual word. never mind that you tried to replace some of the letters with numbers
it was supposed to be 7-8 characters in lenght

I still make my passwords that way, though it's annoying when one has to change them regularily. and they're more difficult to remeber.

The Chia policeman has been around for several months now. The main concern is your username being the same as your e-mail. A combo of letters and numbers should do the trick on passwords.

It must've been a little glitchy and hypersensitive because it was doing it to freinds and not me, and then started with me last night and is just fine now without me altering my password.

I wish they'd pulled a different graphic for it, when the Chia Police appeared I too feared I'd been frozen. Sheesh! Heart attacks all around, courtesy of TNT!

The Chia started doing this to me as well...my password was 19 characters and one of them was an exclamation point.. then I changed my password to something with numbers in it and the Chia went away.

But I do know the Chia has been around for a while..he just seems to have gotten more picky..although I don't see why. My old password was unguessable and as random as can be..so I don't see why it needed changing.

I understand the need for more secure passwords with new hacking programs coming out each day, but having a password consistent of numbers, both small and capital letters and special marks and who knows what might be required in the future. Soon everybody will have other problems, namely that nobody can remember their password anymore. Or they store it somewhere and it gets nabbed from there..

It probably also flags accounts with the same password. The system would automatically flag them considering it's not a human that can think and consider it a side account. So if you've got the same or possibly similar passwords on sides you may get flagged. You can keep playing without changing your password, you'll just get screamed at by that creepy Chia every time you log in.

That's how I make my passwords, and none has ever been broken...

I hate it when something tells me my chosen password "isn't secure enough" all the time. My LJ password is 21 letters long, and there's no reason for anyone to hack it in the first place, but any time I post an entry, it starts demanding that I go change my password right this second.
My school email account is even worse. I can deal with the first two requirements easily(being at least eight characters long and not containing my first or last name), but the other three are pretty annoying. It has to contain at least three of the following categories of characters: uppercase English characters, lowercase English characters, numbers, and symbols(like the octothorpe); it can't contain a common word, "such as would be found in a dictionary"(yes, that's what it says); and it has to be changed every ninety days. All this so I can be absolutely certain I'll get that email about a lost mp3 player or the upcoming St. Patrick's Day celebration.

This is a bit off-topic, but I can't resist: MY school email account is the exact opposite... they set it to your birthday by default, I changed it to something more secure and they reset it to my birthday again (repeat ~3x; at that point I gave up), so... yeah... someone in our IT has been sniffing glue...

About that chia police guy... it's a little hard for me to set a good password because neo maxes out at 20 characters and doesn't let you use all the special characters (| isn't allowed)... it seems a little counterintuitive that way...

Unless someone's been hacking and Neo is worried, I think it's a time-limit issue. I don't change my passwords often. I guess if the Chia Cop doesn't like my new password, then I'll pay attention to the algorithm.

My student email is even worse... They force you to change your password every three months, for "security reasons". If you don't change it, or forget to, you get locked out of everything and have to re-apply for a password at the faculty..

They must have really high expectations of university students, if they think we'll leave passwords hanging around or anything.. (although there are quite a lot of people that honestly don't belong here..)

Pity they aren't as bright themselves, seeing as you can change your password back to the old one again as soon as you have changed it once
