Rightio, I'm having FTP issues connecting to my site. CuteFTP decided to stop working for me a couple of days ago, and says it's unable to connect. I contacted the support department at my host, and they said it was a problem on my side, and suggested trying a different client. So far I've tried CuteFTP and FireZilla.

The error I get when using CuteFTP is:
Quote:
ERROR:> The remote host actively refused the attempt to connect to it.
1) Verify that the destination server name or IP address is correct
2) Verify that the connection port number is correct (under Site Settings | Type tab).
3) The remote server may be temporarily or permanently inaccessible (try again later).
4) Verify that you have chosen the right protocol (SSH2, SSL, FTP, etc.) and have setup all required options for that protocol.
5) Verify that the destination IP address and port numbers are correct.
6) The remote server may be refusing multiple connections from the same client. Try using only one connection thread when connecting to this particular server (Site Settings | Options).
7) Try pinging the address.
8) If you are using a router, verify the router is up and running (check by pinging it and then ping an address outside of the router).
9) Do a traceroute to the destination to verify all routers along the connection path are operational.
10) Verify that your subnet mask is setup properly.
11) Verify that your local software or hardware firewall is not blocking outbound connections originating from CuteFTP.
12) Verify that your anti-virus software is not at fault (try disabling it).

The thing is.. I haven't changed any settings. The firewall is actually disabled (yes, I know it's bad. I don't know why it's like that, but I don't control it).

My settings when I log in are as follows:
Host: ftp.lost-thoughts.net (I've also tried ftp://ftp.lost-thoughts.net and lost-thoughts.net - neither work.)
Username: mailto:alexthedevil@lost-thoughts.net (Yes, the @lost.thoughts.net needs to be there. I've tried an alternate log in too, and it failed).
Obviously, I'm not putting the password here ;)

I'm at a loss for what to do... I can upload via the web, but I'd really prefer not to. So... any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

EDIT: Right.. Tried Bulletproof FTP. Restarted this computer. Restarted the computer with the internet connection. Turned the settings for passive FTP in internet options off and back on. Nothing has worked so far >.<

EDIT 2: With the help of Bno, we've managed to determine that it's a problem with my computer, as he was able to connect fine. I'm still at a loss as to how to fix it - I'm about to try installing my fourth FTP program ._.

Gone, forever.

Don't bother changing FTP clients -- "forcefully denied" ("actively refused") connections aren't caused by the program.

One of two things: somewhere along the way there's a firewall blocking you from connecting on port 21 (did you install SP2? some get-rid-of-evil-things norton product?), in which case you need to talk to whoever's administring it to allow yourself access (try connecting to ibiblio.org on port 21 to check); or your host banned you from connecting to FTP for one reason or another (firewalled on their side -- if the assumption that this is on your side was caused by tech support simply connecting from their own machine, this could still be a problem on their side).

It might be your ISP, like Hunter said. I was able to connect anonymously..

*mutters* I spoke to dad - he hasn't changed any settings. Neither have I.

SP2 is installed, but that was installed some time ago, before I even got my website. So it's not that.

I'm also fairly sure it's not a firewall or ISP problem. We have a wireless network at home, and the computer that the internet is actually connected to (in other words, not mine), connects to FTP perfectly, no problems. So I've managed to narrow it down to a problem with my computer alone.

Question being, I have no clue what the problem actually *is* >.<

I'm not sure... I'm not aware of any to try out. If you could suggest one I'll try and let you know :)

Are you sure the XP firewall isn't on if you have XP?

I think it's on, but it's been on the whole time, when it was working. I'll try disabling that one though...

EDIT: *tacklehugs* It worked :D Thanks Tailseh, for all the help you've given me :)
