I was reading through Gen Chat and saw this:

http://www.pinkpt.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... hlight=what the heck

This kind of language isn't allowed on PPT (as Rune pointed out in her post further down) but yet its not filtered. I understand this is a common used acronym, but its a acronym that doesn't belong here obviously. We've filtered 'kittens,' and the individual word that the 'f' stands for, why should this be allowed to sneak through?

More usage:

http://www.pinkpt.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... hlight=what the heck

http://www.pinkpt.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... 958#540958 (lol)

http://www.pinkpt.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... 958#540958

EDIT: The word filters are already in place, thus the quoted threads will make zero sense.

I totally agree with this. I've mentioned it a couple times and I think it's a good idea. For some reason, some people seem to think it's okay to refer to a word if it's filtered if they don't use the whole word. If a word is filtered, references to it should be as well. I don't think filtering things such as "what the heck" and "lol" would disrupt much and it'd certainly keep the forums cleaner. :)

I've thought about this before and I would like to see the filtering of such abbreviations, and are in direct infringment of PPT's Global Rules. I think it's a very good idea to filter the words mentioned above, and more.

PPT Members could still use "lol", "rofl" and "lol", and I can't see the subtraction of "f" being a huge hassle to anyone.

I'm in agreement over this! I know that it's been discussed before althought I can't remember why the decision was to allow it, maybe it was just that no official decission was made. Do a lot of people feel this way? Maybe we can take it up with Jim or Rune. :)

I fixed the problem. The word filter will now change them to more appropriate words that get the same message across.

Word filters are so insanely stupid... it's almost funny.

Why? Because they keep the forum clean and family friendly? Because they make it so that people don't have to look at meaningless swears? Because it helps keep people in line, and from mindlessly going off on rambles and rants against each other? Because it keeps a moderators job easier by not having to go and edit post after post for swears?

Oh yes... so stupid it's funny.

perhaps the concept of word filters isn't stupid or funny, but the effects can sometimes be funny, if looked at objectively.

nothing funnier than some enraged person saying "smurf off"

On a lot of forums, I agree with you. On this forum, I don't. The majority of the people on this forum are 13-16, if I remember correctly. Swearing is offensive to a lot of them (and others outside of that age bracket), and many that don't take it offensively could still get grounded or punished if a parent looked over their shoulders. It's a lot easier to just cut swears out because they might be offensive to some people than swear anyway and watch people get annoyed with you.

heh, this forum was a little confusing until I realized that what I was seeing was the already-filtered version of all this stuff.

for instance, I have no idea what phrase got turned into "lol" in this thread, and so I was sitting here going "oh my gosh am I going to get a warning for abbreviating laugh out loud?! have I typed that today?!!"

So I went and read the Rules and Guidelines again, and sure enough, there isn't really a list of Forbidden Words.

I originally started this post to ask someone to post them, somewhere secret, somewhere safe (ha) so that we would have a reference, but now that I think about it, I figure as long as I'm not posting any of the words/phrases that *I* know are off limits, and I sure wouldn't post any words/phrases that I don't already know.... so I'm pretty much not in danger of accidentally posting something naughty. Still, I don't know, maybe there is a way you could clarify what is going on in this thread, so that other people don't have a heart attack thinking "ack! I'm not allowed to say what the heck!"

On a slightly related note, when I was little (2-3 grade) I drew a picture of a skunk and a person nearby with a text box that said "P.U." which is the sound you make when you smell a skunk (normally spelled "pew" or "phew!")... I was a star student and the only time my principal ever looked at me disapprovingly was when she looked over my shoulder at that picture... I don't know what she thought, because I didn't keep the picture and nobody ever told me what bad word it was that I was supposed to have written. At the time I was completely baffled as to why Mrs. Forbes would look at ME disapprovingly... gee, I didn't know P.U. was a bad word!? Looking back, I can guess that apparently the P looked like an F, or else the U looked like an O.

But everyone here is old enough that we won't accidentally come up with letter combinations or words that just HAPPEN to be offensive. At least, the likelihood is pretty slim. If you're offending someone, you either did it on purpose, or else failed to think about whether you were being offensive.

So.... think first, avoid strikes! :)

The filter is now in place and the original problem word is now replaced by "what the heck" and some others are replaced by "lol". The original post was about the problem words, but they've been filtered, so you won't be able to see them and the thread probably reads a bit odd if you don't know what they were. ;)
