I know what you're saying Miz Sparrow. When I came to this thread and it was talking about people saying "what the heck" and how bad it was and then other people chiming in and agreeing all I could think was this is one uptight place.

Word filters are so insanely stupid... it's almost funny.

Why? Because they keep the forum clean and family friendly? Because they make it so that people don't have to look at meaningless swears? Because it helps keep people in line, and from mindlessly going off on rambles and rants against each other? Because it keeps a moderators job easier by not having to go and edit post after post for swears?

Oh yes... so stupid it's funny.

Clean of harmless words stamped as evil for no consistent reason in particular. And obviously having mods edit them instead is even more stupid, but that's not the alternative I'd have proposed.

As for the rest, it doesn't actually do that. People will post what intended to regardless of what words they're allowed to use for it, we just see masses of stupid repetitive smilies instead - and the only arguments it'll prevent are those between swearing people and people who whine about that to them.

As for age, the words remain just words, regardless of what age you are. There is no reason age matters beyond delusional social norms of childly 'innocence'. And replacing them with 'non-offensive' alternatives like 'darn' and 'chucks' that end up meaning the exact same thing is even sillier. Although creativity points go to 'fiddlesticks'. :P

Great, another one of these arguments. Let me guess "DOWN WITH CENSORSHIP!", right? Get over it...

BTW, shouldn't the occasional dubbleyou-tee-eff (spelled out like that, or some other variant) be treated just like the abbreviations? They're absolutely no different, except longer, so I don't see why they should be any different. I doubt that if I posted that, that it would be given a second thought. Of course, they'd probably have to be manually altered since they're too inconsistant to grab with a filter.

There's censorship and then there's censorship. I'm personally not a big fan of China's idea of the word, but when it comes to censoring words you wouldn't what to say in front of Grandma it's fine in my book.

It gets hazy when it comes to abbreviations because the person posting doubleyou-tee-ef or something as such could have an entirely different view on what it means than the reader.

A person could be trying to abbreviate the World Taekwondo Federation and the filter turns it into "I guess I'm going to have to call the what the heck and see if they really are a governing body."

How about someone creates a board in the polls section and asks people to post their initials. Along comes William Timothy Farnell and quotes the main post which contained the posters initials and now below all it says is "what the heck". Ol' Tanya Uma Renee Dunlap now thinks William is making fun of her and thus ensues a flame war.

The possibilities are endless.

If that was the really the case, both Willy and Tanya should do it like this: William. T. F. Or T. U. R. Dunlap.

P.S. No one usually quotes the main post in full content anyway. Especially not for polls, seeing as every post is replying to the first one, unlike in misc disc.

P.P.S I appreciate your wit, but have you heard of Richard Edward Thomas Adam Radley Damien? :P

People will post what they want to post, mods will catch it, with or without the filters, and people will thusly get in trouble. These are the forum rules, they are not up for argument. We are a site that allows children to view it, it may not fit in with your views, but in keeping this site without swears, and innarpropriate words, we feel that we are creating the safest environment we can to allow for people of all ages to read this site. Were I a 12 year old again, and I was viewing websites covered in swears, i'm sure my parents would not be pleased. But if they're replaced by words like 'darn' 'chucks' and 'fiddlesticks', I don't think my parents would notice or mind.
We mod this forum as we see fit, and if you have any further suggestions or discussions reguarding this issue, I suggest you take them up with an administrator. But until the point where you suggest something that works as a more 'viable' solution, the word filters will remain in place.

Attention to the masses arguing about swear words!

This is a family friendly forum, therefor we do try to limit and unalow offensive content. Fidds has so beauitfuly come through for those concerned and changed the filter so that abreviations containing curses in them are filtered. We all know what these words are, and for of those of you reading this thread post-filter-alteration, they are for the most part the "F" the word or the "A" word. These abbreviations have been replaced with 'lol' and 'what the heck' in order to be more family friendly. Yay!

There is no way PPT will ever not have a filter, and the suggestion of removing it is so silly I'm :roflol:. Therefor arguing about it anymore is just silly. We are good little 0:) ! PPT wouldn't have a filter if over the years the administration hadn't seen fit to put one in places. Unpleasent and unfortunate events mostly forced the issue, as well as people who are rude enough not to consider their younger peers.

So seeing as how the problem has been dealt with this thread is locked. Have a nice day and please remember not to swear.
